Netflix is on the cusp of renewing 13 Reasons Why.
The streamer is near a deal for a second season of the controversial drama about teen suicide, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Sources tell THR that a writers room for the sophomore run has been up and running for a few weeks. Netflix declined comment.
13 Reasons Why is a Netflix hit right now. It’s led to plenty of internet debates about depression, high school bullying and many critiques about their graphic depiction of Hannah’s suicide. Spoilers? Whether you loved it or hated it, it was much see TV and perfect for binging.
Anyway, I’ll write more about my opinion of the show another time but I will say that there is no need for a sequel. What more do we need to see from this universe? Hannah killed herself and we were given the 13 reasons why. We’re good here.
People online think we need to see how these people are affected by the suicide hearing. Uh, the school definitely lost that lawsuit. Bryce is probably in jail. Alex killed himself. Clay is probably humping that goth girl. Mr. Porter lost his job. Jeff is still dead (RIP). I think I just cleared up all confusion and there’s no need for a second season.
Sometimes shows can just exist as a one-off. There was a story a couple of weeks ago about HBO begging the creator of Big Little Lies to write a second season. Why? It’s very possible to tell a quick story over the course of one season.
Imagine every movie you’ve ever seen got a sequel? It would ruin the original product. Do you need to see what happens next for Forrest Gump? No. We don’t need a second season of 13 Reasons Why.
