Zion Williamson is coming whether the NBA is ready or not and for whatever reason, professional sports still use an archaic system of drafting players into their leagues so unfortunately, Zion can’t just sign wherever he wants.
So let’s rank the best possible landing spots for one of the most athletically gifted prospects ever. Obviously, we’re crossing off teams like the Warriors and the Bucks and any team outside of the lottery.
Also, cross off Cleveland Cavaliers. No. Fuck that.
Here are the Top 7 most exciting landing sports for Zion Williams:
7. Phoenix Suns
Let’s pretend we live in a world where the Phoenix Suns organization isn’t the worst in the NBA and they can actually pull themselves together to make a connective chain of good decisions. Huge suspension of disbelief required here.
Devin Booker and DeAndre Ayton are one player away from actually making an impact. They also lack enough quality role players to supplement their two budding starts BUT who cares about role players when Zion and Ayton are both putting up 20 and 10 on a nightly basis.
6. Los Angeles Lakers
This is the least likely option out of all these teams on this list but let’s not rule out the idea that the Lakers bottom out and sneak into the top of the draft. Do you see the guys they’re throwing out there? Alex Caruso, Mo Wagner and 34-year old LeBron James with his groin hot glued into place.
It’s safe to assume that the Lakers won’t be getting Anthony Davis. The New Orleans Pelicans only pretended to want to trade with LA so they can destroy the Lakers organization from the inside. No one wants Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram
But all of a sudden drop Zion Williamson into the heart of Los Angeles like The Incredible Hulk leaping out of a helicopter into the center of a battlefield and just like that, Los Angeles is relevelant again.
5. Atlanta Hawks
There is a growing wave that Zion should land on the Atlanta Hawks, and rightfully so. Trae Young has exploded in the second half of the season. Now that he’s seen the same teams multiple times, he’s figured out how to manipulate NBA-level defenses. John Collins is sneaky one of the best big men in the entire sport and Kevin Huerter is getting BUCKETS while looking goofy as hell.
Out of all the teams in the draft lottery, Atlanta is probably the most deserving of Zion as they appear to not only actually have a real team building plan but they are executing that plan with expert precision.
Plus, Zion Williamson could get a guest verse on the next Lil Baby record. Young Thug ft. Zion. This mixtape is going to be FIRE.
4. Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks might have pulled the wool over our eyes. They traded Trae Young to the Atlanta Hawks for Luka Doncic and a 2019 first-round draft pick but that pick was Top 5 protected which means if they continue to loss games, they could sneak their way into the Top 5 and keep their pick.
It’s extremely doubtful that the Mavs end up with the No. 1 overall pick but they could still end up with Zion. Stranger things have occurred. We just saw them trade for Luka last year. Why wouldn’t they just trade up again this year?
Luka Doncic. Kristaps Porzingis. Zion Williamson. My god.
3. Chicago Bulls
Do not sleep on how amazing Zion Williamson will look in a Chicago Bulls team. The Slam Magazine cover of Zion and Michael Jordan dunking side-by-side is going to make people emotional.
Wendell Carter Jr, Lauri Markkanen and Zach Lavine. The Bulls are closer than people recognize to returning to the postseason, especially in the Eastern Conference. Imagine just putting a Blake Griffin-esque talent onto this roster. What are the Bulls next season? 4th seed?
2. New York Knicks
Zion Williamson in Madison Square Garden. Not totally sure what other words are needed after that. The New York Knicks have been *turns on megaphone* TRASH for about two decades now and MSG is still the most electric arena in the NBA. Can you imagine what’s going to happen when he scores his first career 50-point game at home in New York?
The building is going to collapse into Penn Station from outrageous celebration when Zion dunks on Joel Embiid’s cranium. James Dolan will be able to repair it all for free with the ridiculous tax breaks he gets for owning that building but that’s a conversation for another day.
The Knicks have never landed a big free agent so perhaps it’s foolish to assume that this summer will suddenly provide a different result for this franchise but something just feels different. There’s a hint of hope in the air.
Put Zion with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Knicks in 4.
1. New Orleans Pelicans
If the Pelicans get Zion Williamson that means that the New York Knicks won the lottery and traded his rights to New Orleans for Anthony Davis and AD is in New York playing with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
