Speaking at an event last month for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Omar said, “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”
The New York Post published Thursday’s tabloid with the quote from Omar, who is one of two Muslim women in Congress, and an image of the Twin Towers engulfed in flames from September 11, 2001. Under the picture is the headline “Here’s your something.” (CNN)
Soo Minnesota congresswoman, Ilhan Omar is getting dragged left and right after describing 9/11 as ‘some people did something’ which is a wildly reductive way to explain a fairly recent catastrophic event in America history.
The New York Post returned volley with an super over the top cover.
The ironic part of this whole back and forth is that Omar was giving a speech about how Americans treat all Muslims as if they’re the terrorists that attacked the Twin Towers and by overreacting with that New York Post cover, they are inciting violence against Omar and Muslims thus proving her original point.
Normally, I would quickly defend Ilhan Omar automatically. The point she was attempting to make was absolutely correct. We are raised in a society to believe that Islam is our enemy which is truly disgusting.
That being said, Omar needs to clean this upa bit.
A few weeks ago she got dunked on for making a really lame jab of Jews being cheap. She is clearly an intelligent woman who appears to actually want to improve the country but she’s speaking flippantly like the right wing assholes she’s attempting to agitate.
I’m not a fan of the whole ‘they go low, we go high’ Barney nonsense. That attitude is the reason why Hillary Clinton isn’t president. The way the world works, you are 1000% allowed to fight fire with fire. You get rewarded for that.
But you can’t be out here starting those fires.
Again, Ilhan Omar was trying to explain how poorly Muslims are treated and how frequently they are the targets of violent attacks because of the actions of a few radical extremists 18 years ago but that sentence out of context is wild.
If you’re making smart and most importantly, objectively correct points, you don’t need to put that spice on it.
Also fuck the New York Post and anyone who is launching death threats at this young woman for an out of context sentence. That quick fuse and charge to hurt her is why she’s saying what she’s saying.
sidenote: If homegirl decides to say fuck it and goes full Malcolm X on this issue, I’m all in. It would be cool if she chilled with the controversial sound bites because people in right-wing media are like cats when they see laser pointers.
They just pounce on whatever dumb shiny artificial problem they can and they look like idiots doing it so you should probably stop feeding them more nonsense to vomit up but at the same time, TALK YOUR SHIT ILHAN. Let me know when we start throwing bricks through windows.
