Elizabeth Banks has named and shamed a huge Hollywood director she believes doesn’t make enough films focusing on women: Steven Spielberg.
Speaking about the director at the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards last night (14 June), Banks said: “I went to Indiana Jones and Jaws and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made. And by the way, he’s never made a movie with a female lead. Sorry, Steven. I don’t mean to call your ass out, but it’s true.”
Before I hit her with that ‘well, actually’, I should probably say that I agree with the point she was trying to make. Male directors don’t cast female leads enough. That is the truth. Post Wonder Woman hopefully leads to people realizing that women can do this acting thing do.
But there’s a couple of problems with calling out Steven Spielberg for never casting a female lead. One problem being that it’s Steven Spielberg. Really? That’s the person you want to blame for this? He is one of the most beloved film makers ever. The motherfucker made E.T. and Saving Private Ryan. Don’t you ever speak to him like he isn’t on one.
The biggest problem is that he made The Sugarland Express starring Goldie Hawn and The Color Purple starring like, mostly women. Also technically The BFG is starring a young lady as well. Also also, Elizabeth Banks isn’t good enough of an actress to be in a Spielberg production to begin with.
Again, women should star in more movies and blah blah but maaaaybe let’s call out Michael Bay who only casts women that he is trying to sleep with and let Steven Spielberg cook.
