I want to start of by saying that 2016’s Captain America: Civil War was the best movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the perfect culmination of the 12 movies that were released prior. Everything was leading up to that first moment where we saw all of the heroes fighting in that airport. I was sweating during that whole sequence. I’m stressed just thinking about it.
In 2018 we will be getting the biggest MCU movie of all, Avengers: Infinity War, which will have the largest cast and potentially a billion dollar budget. Needless to say, that movie is going to be amazing.
But now we’re in a strange no-man’s land for 2017 Marvel as there are a few movies in the interim period that are supposed to lead up to Infinity War. Plus, the Marvel heavy hitters are most likely leaving the franchise after Infinity War so we are approaching the finish line for Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemworth. I get the feeling Chris Hemworth wants to have like, a slice of pizza instead of having to be the most jacked dude in the world 24/7.
But which 2017 Marvel movie will be the best?
Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first time that Marvel has their hands of the Spider-Man franchise after making a deal with Sony. Tom Holland was dope in Civil War and he might be the best Peter Parker yet, mostly because he’s not a 35-year old man attempting to play a 16-year old boy. No offense, Andrew Garfield.
Also, it looks like this will be the first Spider-Man movie where Peter Parker isn’t going to be crying the whole time. We get it, Peter has faced some tragedy but he’s still a fun character. Tobey Maguire was crying nonstop. Oh, and dancing to jazz music like an asshole. #Neverforget.
Then you get a little Tony Stark action in there. And I haven’t even mentioned that Michael Keaton is returning to superhero movies to play The Vulture. Needless to say, this movie is going to be lit as fuck.
But Spider-Man: Homecoming will not be the best 2017 Marvel movie.
I think I’ve watched the last Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer no less than 60 times. Rough estimate there. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was shockingly good. I have no idea where James Gunn came from but he made the perfect space opera.
Now the sequel is adding, Mantis, Ayesha and Ego, the Living Planet. They are adding so many characters from a comic book universe that I gave zero shits about until I saw that opening sequence of Chris Pratt playing music on his Walkman and kicking aliens in the face.
Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok will be absolute fire emoji. But what will actually be the best 2017 Marvel movie?
The correct answer is Thor: Ragnarok.
The best 2017 Marvel movie will be Thor: Ragnarok and it won’t even be close. With Taika Waititi directing this movie, this will be the first Thor movie that will actually be clever and well written. In previous Thor movies, the only real enjoyable character was Loki and Cat Dennings (‘s tits) but I think we will finally see a Thor movie in which Thor is the most charming character.
Plus, Ragnarok will sneaky double as an Incredible Hulk movie and will essentially be the live-action version of the popular comic story, World War Hulk, in which Hulk basically gets forced to compete in these alien gladiator matches.
If all of that doesn’t get you hyped, then there’s something wrong with you. But I’ll attempt to sweeten the pot a little bit. As I mentioned earlier, this is the last wave of movies before Avengers: Infinity War which means that Ragnarok, which takes mostly in space, will do a lot of heavy lifting to get us from where Civil War left off to where Infinity War begins.
Get ready for a bunch of Infinity Stones and Krees and of course the GAWD, Thanos. We may finally get a better look at Thanos before he becomes the main character of Infinity War.
Oh, did I mention that Cate Blanchett is that main villain in Thor Ragnarok? Cate fucking Blanchett is playing DEATH. Yea, just preorder those tickets right now.
Thanks for reading. Tweet to @TheLesterLee with the Marvel movie you think will be the best of 2017. Also, go ahead and throw Deadseriousness a Like on Facebook so that I can keep the lights on around here at HQ.
