United Airlines barred two teenage girls from boarding a flight on Sunday morning and required a child to change into a dress after a gate agent decided the leggings they were wearing were inappropriate. That set off waves of anger on social media, with users criticizing what they called an intrusive, sexist policy, but the airline maintained its support for the gate agent’s decision.
The girls, who were about to board a flight to Minneapolis, were turned away at the gate at Denver International Airport, the company said on Sunday. United doubled down on that decision, defending it in a series of tweets on Sunday.
The incident was first reported on Twitter by Shannon Watts, a passenger at the airport who was waiting to board a flight to Mexico. In a telephone interview from Mexico on Sunday afternoon, Ms. Watts said she noticed two visibly upset teenage girls leaving the gate next to hers. Both were wearing leggings.
Ms. Watts went over to the neighboring gate and saw a “frantic” family with two young girls, one of whom was also wearing leggings, engaged in a tense exchange with a gate agent who told them, “I don’t make the rules, I just enforce them.”
Shout out to United Airlines for being that lame guy you went to school with who used to post Facebook statuses in like 2008 saying ‘how are girls getting away with just wearing leggings. It’s like they’re not even wearing pants’. Which was suuuch a clever and divisive take in 2008 but now it’s almost 10 years later and a major airline still has the brain of a dumb 15-year old boy who’s bored on the Internet and wants to have a ‘debate’ and get Likes.
Also, how about the gate agent being a gigantic asshole. Whenever you say out loud ‘I don’t make the rules, I just enforce them’ what you’re really saying is ‘I’m a dick for no reason and my kids hate me’.
Having said all of that, I totally agree with United Airlines. I don’t want leggings on my planes. I base all of my public transportation knowledge off of the disgusting MTA subways and trains.
I know one thing to be 1000% true, they do not clean those seats so I can’t imagine there’s someone going around after every flight scrubbing and power washing all of the chairs. We can’t have chicks in leggings going on long extended flights in those chairs and expect the rest of them to fly back in those same disheveled chairs.
Everyone put your vaginas away. Especially on a flight to Mexico. No fucking way that plane is coming back from Mexico cleaner than when it arrived. If anything, these girls are probably going to catch an infection if they wear leggings. They should be thanking United Airlines for saving them from a surprise UTI in Cancun.
Thanks for reading. Tweet to @TheLesterLee if you think leggings should banned from airplanes. Also, go ahead and throw Deadseriousness a Like on Facebook so that I can keep the lights on around here at HQ.
