Superhero movies have taken the world by storm in the last decade and the scope of the Marvel universe is massive. DC have attempted to build their own cinematic universe and, while not as successful as their rivals, they’ve still made some great movies. But what if you’re not bothered about the huge cinematic universe thing and you just want to enjoy a superhero movie without having to watch 10 others so you know what’s going on?
A lot of people are casual superhero movie fans and they’re not willing to commit to the Marvel or DC universes, but they still want to get their hero fix. But I’ve got news for you, Marvel and DC aren’t the only people making superhero movies, and they didn’t invent the idea, so there are plenty of great alternatives. These are the best superhero movies that aren’t Marvel or DC.
A lot of people don’t realize it, but Marvel and DC aren’t the only comic companies that have their own universe. Bloodshot, starring Vin Diesel, is a great movie based on a character by Valiant Comics. In 2015, Dan Mintz of DMG Entertainment bought up the entire library of Valiant comics and he has big plans. After Valiant was acquired by Mintz and DMG, they started work on Bloodshot. Vin Diesel plays a soldier that is killed and then brought back to life as a super soldier by a shady organization. It’s a fun movie with a bit of a darker tone than most of the Marvel movies, and it could be the beginning of a rival cinematic universe. Valiant Comics relaunched their universe in 2012, so it’s likely to be a lot more streamlined than anything that Marvel and DC have come up with.
Hellboy is one of the best comic book movies ever made, and it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. The recent reboot was a huge flop, but the original movie made about the half demon monster hunter is a great movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and it’s unlike any other superhero movie out there. Ron Perlman’s performance of Hellboy is spot on and Guillermo Del Toro really brings the world to life. If you haven’t seen Hellboy before, you’ve got to watch it (just make sure you don’t accidentally watch the 2019 reboot).
If you ask most people what the best female-led superhero movie is, they’ll probably say Wonder Woman. After all, it was the highest grossing superhero origin movie of all time. But if you’re looking for great female heroes, look no further than The Incredibles. If you’re looking for something a bit more light hearted and fun, this is a classic. A lot of people call it the most amazing Fantastic Four movie ever made, so if you were disappointed by all of the terrible attempts at bringing those iconic comic book heroes to life, The Incredibles is a great alternative.
Marvel and DC might reign in the box office, but there are so many other great superhero movies out there.
