2018 was a year in which music happened. Believe it or not, people are still making albums. It’s wild. I’ve listened to pretty much everything that came out, except Post Malone’s. I don’t want to get an ear infection. But I’ve found a way to pick just 50 of the best of the best for you people.
Before we start, there are three things you need to understand that I prioritize in an album above all else: women playing guitars, beats that make me want to punch my mailman in the chest and Earl Sweatshirt.
Here are the best 50 albums of 2018:
50. Mac Miller – Swimming
Swimming isn’t my favorite Mac Miller offering but context is everything and I’d be a fool to keep him off this Top 50 list. #RIP
49. Boygenius- boygenius
I told you off top I’m a sucker for a girl playing guitar but what I forgot to mention is that I’m also all about supergroups and boygenius, consisting of Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers scratches every itch for me.
48. Tirzah – Devotion
I know what you’re thinking. Lester, you just like this album because it came out on your birthday and you make everything about yourself. Fucking YUP.
47. The 1975 – A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships
The 1975 snuck in just at the buzzer dropping this album on November 30th and blessing us. A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships sounds like an album from a very distant future in which humans are obsolete and all music is created by computers and machines. This is some real Jetsons type shit.
46. Amine -ONEPOINTFIVE
It doesn’t matter if a rapper is the greatest lyricists on planet Earth, if their beats are trash then they are trash rappers and should be immediately turned off. Every beat on Onepointfive SLAPS. This album would be Top 50 it was just the instrumentals alone.
45. Vince Staples – FM!
Vince Staples should probably be the biggest rap star in the world but cool, let’s keep talking about Kanye West getting liposuction. FM! is Vince’s return to rappity rapping as opposed to his last album that was made in a blender.

44. Tanukichan – Sundays
Sunday is the worst day of the week and Tanukichan perfectly captures the vibe of fear, anxiety, stress and fatigue. Also Tanukichan wins the award for best band name on this list.
43. Remy Banks- champ hoody music ep. 2.
I ride or die with any and all New York rappers. I’ll slash your tires if don’t think Bobby Shmurda is the best rapper of all time. Remy Banks.from the group World’s Fair is quietly one of the smoothest rappers I’ve ever heard and his beat selection is excellent.
42. Homeboy Sandman & Edan – Humble Pi
Nobody raps like Homeboy Sandman. He has the most unique voice in hip-hop and his wordplay and nonsequiturs make me want to be a better writer. But the real reason why this album makes the Top 50 is because The Humble Magnificent makes his return. Edan was one of the best underground rappers in the mid-2000s and pretty much quit. He mostly just produces this album but he has a few bars here and there for the people.
41. NADINE – oh my
Oh My is a conceptually pretty simply album but sonically it’s a ‘mood’ as the kids would say. Lead singer Nadia Hulett has the unique ability to sound both timid and confident simultaneously.
