Last week I wrote that Jared Leto’s version of the Joker was getting his own solo movie which I had my concerns with but then I remembered that they had already been working on 4 other Joker related projects and now that I’ve gone through the list, I need answers.
What is happening over at DC?
Jared Leto is getting a spin-off which is fine, I reckon, if you digged Suicide Squad and you wish they didn’t cut out almost his entire storyline. In fact, this movie seems like DC’s apology to Leto for diminishing his role to a brief cameo after it was reported that David Ayer had recorded a lottttt of Joker footage.
Fine. Cool. I’m sure that movie, like Suicide Squad, will be a super cool movie trailer but probably not that great of a movie but that’s the DC specialty.
But then you look more into what DC has in production and here’s something cute I found from summer of 2017:
Warner Bros. taps Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love, This Is Us) to write and direct a movie focused on Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie).
Oh no big deal, DC is actively producing a Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off movie right now. Did DC forget this was happening? Please explain to me the difference between a Joker solo movie and a Joker/Harley Quinn solo movie? And don’t say Harley Quinn or I’m going to fight you.
Okay fine, if you love these two characters so much, I get it. DC, get your money. But here’s the thing, Suicide Squad 2 is still happening.
Variety is reporting Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant, Warrior) is officially on board to write Suicide Squad 2, with an eye for him to direct the sequel as well. Additionally, Variety reports Warner Bros. is hoping the film will begin production by the end of 2017. Previously, it was thought that Suicide Squad 2 wouldn’t start production until 2018, but if they begin this year, the film could potentially be ready for a 2019/2020 release date.
Awesome. Third Joker movie: Check.
So just to recap, there’s a Joker movie. There’s a Joker/Harley Quinn movie. And there’s a Suicide Squad 2 movie starring Joker and Harley Quinn. Did you people ask for this? I know for a fact, I did not.
What’s hilarious about that lineup of movies is that DC is currently working on a Harley Quinn solo movie that Joker will 1000% be in. And no, I don’t mean the Joker/Harley Quinn movie I mentioned earlier. I mean, Margot Robbie is literally getting her own movie on top of all of this garbage and Jared Leto will be in.
Here’s what Margot Robbie had to say last December about all of this chaos:
“There’s a lot going on right now and I’m not sure. I, honestly, I don’t think anyone knows what’s going to be the next thing to happen. But I think everyone’s keen to get Harley back on screen, so everyone is working on lots of different versions of what that could be.”
Here’s a quick question, why exactly is everyone so ‘keen’ to get Harley back on screen? Who saw Suicide Squad and was like ‘This is the best thing ever. Dear DC, please develop 4 Suicide Squad spin-offs simultaneously, please’.
But let’s not forget that 5th Joker movie in the works. Martin Scorsese is producing a Joker origin movie with Todd Phillips signed up to direct the film and Joaquin Phoenix in talks to star in it.
Yes that’s right, DC has 4 Joker movies in development to fit into their poorly planned and executed DCEU and then they also just randomly have a one-off Joker origin story that has nothing to do with anyone of the previous projects. It’s a fun little quick movie they’re making with an Oscar-winning producer for literally no reason other than Cash Rules Everything Around Me.
Imagine if Marvel made a Loki solo movie and then also made him the main villain of Avengers 2 and then also gave him a girlfriend and gave her a solo movie that he would be the co-star in and then after that, Marvel gave Loki and his girlfriend their own solo movie andddd then they made a standalone Loki origin movie produced by Martin Scorsese starring Joaquin Phoenix.
Thanks for reading. Tweet to @TheLesterLee if you think DC should stop making movies for the next 50 years. Also, go ahead and throw Deadseriousness a Like on Facebook so that I can keep the lights on around here at HQ.
