Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict will reportedly be suspended for five games because of an illegal hit on fullback Anthony Sherman, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Schefter added that Burfict is appealing the suspension and will have a hearing next week.
The Bengals released a statement following the news:
“The Bengals are aware of the NFL’s letter to Vontaze regarding a play in last weekend’s game. The film shows that the hit was legal, that Vontaze engaged his opponent from the front, and that contact was shoulder-to-chest. The Club will support Vontaze in the appeal process.”
Shout out to the NFL for suspending Vonzate Burfict 5 games for playing football. Burfict is a one time Pro Bowler and finished second on the team with 101 tackles in only 11 games last season. He’s an x-factor defensively for the Bengals who hope to make the leap this year in a pretty weak AFC.
Honestly, that hit is a tad much in a world where practices are non-contact and rules are in place to lower concussions so that the NFL can stop being sued by former players who get CTE and suddenly start hearing voices in their head to drown their families.
But giving a linebacker a 5-game suspension for doing exactly what a linebacker is supposed to do is an irrational response. Burfict could’ve beat the shit out of his girlfriend and would probably end up with a shorter sentence.
The NFL sucks.
