CNET spoke to Anthony and Joe Russo about Avengers: Infinity War and asked them what fans can expect when it comes to the film subverting genres. It turns out they’ve been inspired by heist films for Infinity War, specifically using it to approach the way in which Thanos goes about taking possession of the six Infinity Stones.
With “Infinity War,” the biggest new element to the movie is Thanos and the fact that he’s entering the storytelling in a very bold, strong way, to the degree that he’s almost one of the leads. We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past. The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, [and] that brought some inspiration.
Things I need in Avengers 3
✔: Villain being the main character
✔: Heist
✔: A million superheroes
Yup, I’m all in on this movie. This could’ve been a boring ass 3-hour movie about Captain America and Iron Man arguing in space while Hawkeye and Black Widow, who are two regular ass humans with no powers, beat the shit out of superpowered aliens.
But instead, we’re getting Ocean’s Eleven with a gigantic purple alien trying to steal a Nintendo Power Glove while he’s swatting away Thor and Vision. I don’t quite remember what happens in Avengers 2 but it’s going to be completely irrelevant after Thanos walks away from the heist saying “I love it when a plan comes together”.
Avengers 3 is going to be the best comic book movie. Shout out to DC for making 4 movies and already planning a complete reboot. Thanos vs. EVERBODY. Can’t wait.
