After An Offseason Full of Davis Webb Propaganda, 4th Round QB Kyle Lauletta, Has Already Outplayed Him

From the moment Eli Manning was benched last season for Geno Smith in a move that made zero sense for everyone involved, we were all led to believe that Davis Webb was the next man up. The 2nd year quarterback was poised to be the next great Giants quarterback after the team decided to draft Saquon Barkley instead of Sam Darnold, Eli’s potential replacement.

But then their lowkey 4th round selection, Kyle Lauletta, stepped in the first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns and looked like a 6-year NFL vet out there who was bored of the preseason already as he went 6-for-9 for 48 passing yards.

Here’s what head coach Pat Shurmur had to say about Lauletta’s performance:

“He’s very calm, and I think he finds a way to make plays,” Shurmur said of Lauletta’s first preseason action on a conference call with Giants reporters Friday afternoon. “He had a nice deep ball down the sideline to Amba [Etta-Tawo] that ended up being a [pass interference]. In fact, somebody asked me at one point why we practice the one-handed catches – that was it right there. They arm-barred us and Amba had a chance to make the one-handed catch. We got the penalty, but we certainly would’ve wanted the catch. But I [think] he’s got a calm presence about him. I think he lost control of the clock once, we got the ball snapped, but those are all things you learn when you’re playing. So, it wasn’t a bad performance to start out for him.”

Meanwhile, Davis Webb looked like a Make-A-Wish kid out there shocked at how intense the NFL was. Every pass he threw was off target. He either bulleted rockets at running backs like, 5 feet away from him or he tossed deep balls in weird places where the wide receivers had no chance at making any plays.

Here’s what Pat Shurmur had to say about Davis Webb:

“He is so prepared and he wants to do well, that’s just his personality, and he does get amped up a little bit but that’s not a bad thing,’’ Shurmur said Friday. “Wanting to do well is a good thing. I think we as coaches can just help him with that.’’

Notice how much praise he gave Kyle Lauletta while casually calling Davis Webb a try-hard loser. Frankly, I concur. Webb is not that dude and if anything, he’s taking practice reps away from Kyle Lauletta who very much looks like that dude.

I say all of this to say: cut David Webb.
