Hey Jason Garrett, Don’t Fuck This Season Up

jason garrett

Last season, first time NFL head coach, Joe Judge, proved he is already one of the better coaches in this league. The New York Giants overachieved and almost made the playoffs with a roster that I would not describe as ‘talented’ and with the worst offensive coordinator in the league: Jason Garrett.

New York ranked 31st in points, 31st in red-zone offense, 31st against the blitz, 31st in completions over 20 yards and 29th in third down conversions.

Reminder, there are only 32 teams in the NFL. The Giants were almost dead last in every offensive category.

You can say that this team tried their best after Saquon Barkley suffered a season-ending injury but it’s the job of the offensive coordinator to put together the best scheme with the players you have available.

And when Barkley was playing in the beginning of the season, he only averaged 1.8 yards per carry. Some of that is on Saquon’s inability to just take positive yardage instead of meandering in the backfield and trying to avoid tackles.

But the main problem was that every run play was predictable. Saquon Barkley had a game last season where he ran for SIX YARDS on 15 carries.

Man, look how great Saquon is when Jason Garrett isn’t his offensive coordinator.

The running game was so bad that Joe Judge had to fire offensive line coach, Marc Colombo, who was hired directly by Jason Garrett. Soooooooooooo…guess who’s next to be fired?

It made sense for a first-time head coach to have a longtime head coach as one of his coordinators to help him through game-time decisions that the first-time head coach had no experience with.

But the Dallas Cowboys underachieved with Jason Garrett so hiring a loser and expecting him to excel was a mistake.

However, Garrett can prove that he’s not a complete bum this season and he’s going to need to in order to stay in the NFL.

Daniel Jones has played in 27 career NFL games. He’s thrown for over 300 yards only 5 times in those 27 games and all of those 300-yard games happened in 2019 BEFORE Jason Garrett was hired.

I have no idea if Daniel Jones can ever be a Top 10 QB in the NFL but Jason Garrett has done everything in his power to restrict Jones’s development.

Daniel Jones’s best game with Garrett was 256 yards. On 41 attempts. That’s disgusting. With Garrett, Jones doesn’t have a single game with more than 7 yards per attempt. Jason Garrett has turned Daniel Jones into a checkdown passer who doesn’t even look down the field.

Jones’s lack of offensive numbers makes even less sense when you look at how frequently he’s playing from behind. He has 907 career pass attempts. 595 of those attempts were with the Giants losing.

Typically quarterbacks put up the most numbers when they’re behind because they have to stop running the ball and need chunk plays down the field to cut into the lead. It’s the reason why Matty Stafford will probably end up having the most passing yards in NFL history. The Lions are always losing and he spends the entire second half of the game hurling it downfield.

Not Daniel Jones.

Jason Garrett has that kid throwing screen passes at the line of scrimmage. Plus, Jones suffers from fumbling issues so in order to initiate a screen pass, you have to allow the pass rush to break into the backfield. Maybe don’t put your fumbling quarterback in constant fear of pass rushers.

And that goes back to their inability to rush the ball and confuse opposing defenses.

I’m actually getting pissed thinking about how terrible Jason Garrett is.

Saquon Barkley is back. The Giants signed Kenny Golladay. They drafted Kardarius Toney. The excuse that Daniel Jones doesn’t have enough ‘weapons’ is fucking over.

Jason Garrett needs to figure this out or he’ll somehow leave the Giants with a worse record than Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur which seemed impossible but here we are.
