Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams Gambled Away His Health Care

jameson williams

Jameson Williams was selected with the no. 12 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions after a season in Alabama where he led the SEC in receiving.

Then he tore his ACL and missed most of his rookie year in Detroit.

He has one career catch.

A 41-yard touchdown.

But still, just one reception. Ever.

If you’re reading this right now, Jameson Williams has exactly one (1) more NFL reception than you.

And now he’s entering his second NFL season injured once again as the Lions are preparing to rest him for the remainder of this preseason.

The only problem is—Williams can’t receive medical treatment from the team because he’s suspended for the first 6 games of the season for gambling.

Earlier this summer, the NFL suspended Jameson Williams 6 games for gambling in the team’s facility.

His suspension was shorter than most gambling punishments because he was betting on college football games instead of NFL games but yea, you can’t be a professional athlete using DraftKings in the locker room.

Unfortunately, our actions have consequences and it’s against NFL policy for suspended players to receive medical treatment from the team so Jameson Williams joins an endless list of dudes who have lost the ability to see a doctor because of their addiction.

People have lost their homes, their families, their savings accounts. All from gambling.

Here’s what Williams had to say about his suspension:

“It hit me out the blue, and it hit a couple players on my team and around the league out the blue. I wasn’t aware of this situation. But as it happened, I took it on the chin. I was ready to move forward. As things went on, I got the consequences. That’s been my whole plan: moving forward from things and just looking at the better days.”

The first step in recovery is admitting you have an illness and accepting accountability so perhaps he is on the right path to maybe start saving up his money again and seeing a doctor.

Let’s hope he doesn’t use this new downtime to hit the slots or start placing bets on baseball games like Phil Mickelson.

Maybe one day we’ll get to see Jameson Williams play football again. Or for many of us, for the first time.
