The return of 3-time MVP Aaron Judge carried the weight of roster decisions. With Cody Bellinger back in left field daily, Aaron Judge back in right field daily, Trent Grisham, rookie Spencer Jones and freshly acquired at the trade deadline Heliot Ramos all shared one final outfield position.

The selfless, pinstripes-off-my-back, salt of the Earth Trent Grisham elected to go on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain, with today’s updates questioning if Trent sustained a season-ending injury.

You’d love to have all your horses for the final September playoff push. The Yankees finally in achieved their summer body—right after Labor Day—only 4 games behind a less-talented Tampa Bay Rays team—watching Wild Card baseball from the crib in sight.

But Trent Grisham’s batting .211/.308/.395 with 18 homers and a 98 wRC+ in 484 plate appearances. 128 wRC+ with 37 bombs a year ago, this year he’s playing like he can’t wait to be signed for significantly fewer dollars, elsewhere, if there’s even a season next year.

Meanwhile, Spencer Jones is balling. Hitting .246/.320/.447 with 9 homers, 31 RBIs, and a 113 wRC+ in 70 career games. Spencer’s CF defense, eh,-1 Outs Above Average, -1 Defensive Runs Saved over 152 1/3 innings in center (Grisham -6OAA, -8DRS, bad).

Jones’s 116 wRC+, second on the Yankees since August 1st behind only NL slugging leader Luis Garcia Jr.

The next Aaron Judge is forming before our eyes—now, thanks to Grisham’s sacrifice, we can see him play alongside MVPs Bellinger and Judge—as they get a quick little spring training series against the Colorado Rockies before a Blood & Guts weekend series with the Devil Rays.

Plus, Jasson Dominguez gets called up for one final tryout. Maybe he’ll break out, force his way onto the postseason roster. Let’s check in on his defense these days:

Always next year…
