Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop, Trea Turner, is entering free agency. To prepare for his big payday, Turner released a hype video with a voiceover from Jon Hamm.
First of all, very strange move by a 3-time All-Star to drop a hype video. Does Trea Turner think the 30 MLB GMs don’t know who he is? Does he think a 2-minute video is going to do enough to explain who he is?
But we can talk about Turner at a later date. My real takeaway from this video is that Jon Hamm is now taking Craigslist side gigs to make ends meet. Remember when he was the biggest TV star on the planet?
From 2007-2015, Don Draper was the biggest character on TV every Sunday night on AMC. Breaking Bad was in and out but Mad Men was a different beast. I’ll argue with anyone that Mad Men has the greatest first episode of any show. Give me one sip of Bud Light and I’ll bother you all night about it.
I really thought Jon Hamm was going to be the next great American movie star. I guess he can be considered a movie star in that he has appeared in a lot of movies but rarely was he made to look like an actual star. Usually he’s just a secondary character who’s a dick like in Bridesmaids or Baby Driver.
These days, if you want to see more Don Draper you have to wait for a commercial break to see him in a Progressive Insurance ad getting rejected by Flo. Oh, or you can watch hype videos from random shortstops with Hamm’s narration.
Someone please make a movie for this man. He needs checks and reasons to leave his house.
As far as Trea Turner goes, he’s coming off an All-Star season in which he played 160 out of 162 games. That’s unheard of in modern baseball to find a guy who actually plays every single game.
In 2020, Turner led the NL in hits. In 2021, guess what he did. Yup, led the National League in hits. This season he was only second in hits. He’s one of the best shortstops in baseball right now. I get the feeling he didn’t need this hype video and was just doing Hamm a favor by letting him participate.
Hopefully, Turner gets one of those massive 9-figure contracts and Jon Hamm gets a tiny piece of it. Everyone involved deserves it.
