Barstool Sports is a cool website where you can read a 600-word blog that’s formatted in one single paragraph with no punctuation, you can hear podcasts from awkward guys with absolutely nothing interesting to say, you can see 19 year old college girls posing in bikinis before their old enough to recognize that they’re being exploited and you can test your computers anti-malware security all in one place thanks to Dave Portnoy.
If none of those amazing features pique your interest then you can stick around for the main source of all of their content: finding any criticisms of their product and spending weeks tirelessly defending themselves and encouraging their fans to attack anyone who has something negative to say about them.
The problem is, the targets of their attacks are frequently women. You run your company run like a fraternity during rush week and you’re going to find yourself angering women. Oh, they’re also racist as hell but that’s a conversation for a different day.
There have been plenty of think pieces written about rape culture as a whole and more specifically, Barstool’s reinforcement of it. And what does Dave Portnoy do when the world thinks his company is harmful to women?
He starts physically harming women.
A report from Business Insider has detailed a 20-year old’s relationship with Portnoy in which he flew her out and filmed them having rough sex without her agreeing to be filmed or the rough sex.
Here’s a cute little passage about their sexual encounter:
From there, things escalated until, as Madison put it, “I felt like I was just a human sex doll.”
Two days later, Madison texted a close friend. “It was so rough I felt like I was being raped he video taped me and spit in my mouth and choked me so hard I couldn’t breathe,” she wrote in messages viewed by Insider. “And it hurt and I was literally screaming in pain.”
She recalled crying and shouting, “Too much! Too much!” and “It hurts!”
“It was so painful,” Madison said. “I kept trying to get away and he was like, ‘Stop running away from me. Stop running away from me.'”
But Portnoy, she said, “just went harder.”
Madison’s flight home wasn’t until two days later, so she slept on Portnoy’s couch both nights. They did not have sex again.
The story goes on to mention Dave Portnoy’s repeated need to have sex with young girls and pummel them up for no reason leaving them anywhere between stunned and traumatized.
As you could predict, most of the Barstool fan reaction landed on shitting on these women for taking a shot at their daddy.
About a week ago I wrote about Trevor Bauer and the weirdos who defend his behavior. There are obvious similarities between Bauer and Portnoy but it’s important for me to make this declaration clear for every guy who doesn’t understand what these two assholes did wrong:
CONSENT CAN BE TAKEN AWAY AT ANY TIME
You’re allowed to be into rough sex. Do your thing, my guy. Get your shit off. But the woman on the receiving end of your wrath should be made aware that she is getting involved with someone who is going to strangle and dehumanize her before she randomly starts getting slapped around.
And more importantly, a woman can give the thumbs up that she’s down and you can have all the text message evidence of her being super down and all that good shit but her consent can be revoked if the sex reaches a point where she starts to feel abused or attacked and it doesn’t matter if she was down to hump you an hour earlier if she has to visit the fucking hospital after.
Dave Portnoy clearly gets off on hurting and humiliating the youngest women he can legally be alone with.
As Barstool continues to be called out for their misogyny they can no longer get away with the ‘I’m just kidding’ defense when they leave the office at the end of the workday to go home and spit in women’s faces while sneakily recording them for their weird Dennis Reynolds-esque sex library.
Maybe stop buying their wack ass t-shirts for a little while.
