Folks are angry at Drew Barrymore for bringing back her daytime talk show without any writers in the midst of the Hollywood actors/writers strike. Drew Barrymore has been in this industry her entire life so she understands the severity of crossing this picket line to bring her show back with none of her previous writers.
Also not great that apparently, anyone in the audience wearing writer’s guild pins was forced to leave and they had their bags searched at the door.
Went to @DrewBarrymoreTV after winning tickets, unaware of the #WGA strike. We took pins & went in, got kicked out, & verbally assaulted by @DrewBarrymore’s crew. It’s clear they don’t support #WGAStrong, writers or fans! #DrewTheRightThing So we took shirts and joined. Fuck that pic.twitter.com/UuyCxAS491

Always a good sign you’re doing the right thing when you are individually singling people out and demanding to know if they have any recording devices on them. That paranoia is a could atmosphere for a fun daytime TV taping.
But Drew Barrymore saw all the criticisms of the Drew Barrymore Show returning and addressed her fans in the celebrity self-reflection apology room they all go to when they record videos where they need to look earnest.
Drew Barrymore apologizes for bringing back her talk show during the writers’ strike and explains why she is doing it:
“We aren’t gonna break rules and we will be in compliance. I wanted to do this because, as I said, this is bigger than me and there are other people’s jobs on… pic.twitter.com/Mqb4chyKzp

“I know there is just nothing I can do that will make this OK to those that it is not OK with. I fully accept that. I fully understand that. There are so many reasons why this is so complex, and I just want everyone to know my intentions have never been in a place to upset or hurt anymore. It’s not who I am. I’ve been through so many ups and downs in my life, and this is one of them,” she said through tears.
“I deeply apologize to writers. I deeply apologize to unions,” Barrymore said.
“There’s a huge question of the why — why am I doing this?” she continued. “Well, I certainly couldn’t have expected this kind of attention, and we aren’t going to break rules and we will be in compliance. I wanted to do this, because as I said, this is bigger than me and there are other people’s jobs on the line.”
Now, some could make the argument that if she is truly sorry she could very easily just, ya know, halt production. She is one of the most famous people ever.
CBS cannot make her do anything she doesn’t want to do.
In that regard, Drew isn’t actually apologizing at all and she shouldn’t be. She has nothing to apologize for.
Sure, the writers are on strike but what about the rest of the crew that has to suffer while a few selfish writers try to make the industry more fair and lucrative for everyone?
Are the camera crew and everyone supposed to just like, sit at home and collect unemployment checks?
Uh, I’m sure they would muuuuuch rather spend at least 10 hours a day with the lovely Drew Barrymore—who always seems like she’s either about to cry or just finished up a good cry sesh. The ideal working conditions.
And honestly, the Drew Barrymore Show doesn’t even need writers.
We all know the genius comes directly from the star host.
I mean, she’s won a prestigious Webby Award from this show.
Writers can bring their little ideas over to her but it’s Drew who makes this show so spectacular. She’s the one barefoot sitting indian style on the floor regurgitating therapy speak at her bored guests. No writer could give her that.
Like, the wonderful moment when she sat with Dylan Farrow to discuss her HBO miniseries Allen v. Farrow.
She didn’t need writers to make her look Dylan Farrow right in the eyes and say she regretted working with Woody Allen and having a child made her realize how Hollywood gaslit her even though there were Woody Allen allegations in the 70s and literally everyone and their mothers knew he was a pervert long before Drew Barrymore ever worked with him.
A show writer might have prevented her from talking to an abuse victim and essentially saying “Ah yes, we are both victims of Woody Allen”.
With so many shows on hiatus, we NEED the Drew Barrymore Show.
We need Drew Barrymore awkwardly attempting to maintain her persona as this twee, bright-eyed little girl adult woman who understands everyone’s trauma because she’s an empath or something while being one pair of yoga pants away from being Gwyneth Paltrow.
Thank the lord the Drew Barrymore Show is back. Let’s goooooooo.
