The Pipe Bomb: CM Punk is Returning (Again), LA Knight is Over as Hell and Don Callis Arrives

Welcome to The Pipe Bomb, where we discuss the latest news and events from the world of wrestling, both inside and outside the ring.

CM Punk is coming back…again

It’s finally official. CM Punk is returning to AEW on June 17th for the premiere of Collision—a show that was literally created for him to exist separately from the rest of the roster because no one in the company actually likes him.

I’m having a hard time being excited about the return of a sociopath who tried to take down the entire company because Hangman Page was too mean to him in a promo. CM Punk is one of the greatest of all time but he acts as if he is blessing the world with his presence when I enjoy AEW just fine with or without him. We’ll get into it later but this Elite vs. Blackpool Combat Club storyline is the best feud in wrestling right now and it has nothing to do with Punk.

He’s incapable of going a full match without breaking every bone in his skeleton. He seems way too in love with the idea of him being the good guy despite spending his entire career as one of the best heels and getting into a fight with the Elite, the no. 1 faces of the company.

But I can take a step back and recognize my frustrations with Punk are selfish. Growing up watching Ring of Honor, I was excited for Punk to come to AEW and get back in the ring with some of these legends like Bryan Danielson and Samoa Joe. Now it’s looking like he and FTR are going to take the Trios belts from House of Black. Can’t wait for CM Punk and FTR vs. The Best Friends in a best of 7 series for a 3-man tag team belt I can’t even pretend to give a shit about.

CM Punk is going to leave AEW when his contract ends without ever being in a ring with Kenny Omega because his strange friend Ace Steel bit a guy.

LA Knight is OVER

In the middle of the Friday night press conference before the Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia, Triple H was drowned out by seas of LA Knight chants. But for some reason, LA Knight wasn’t even on the card.

LA Knight has been over for months and he wasn’t in the Royal Rumble, didn’t have a match at Wrestlemania and once again has been hidden from a pay-per-view even though the crowd is losing their shit every time he grabs a mic.

He speaks like a combination of The Rock and Stone Cold—arguably two of the greatest talkers in wrestling history. Everyone in the arena is hanging on every word he has to say when he holds a microphone.

WWE has historically punished guys who have the ability to get themselves over without them. While WWE tries to force Austin Theory down our throats, LA Knight is quietly one of the top heels in the company who wasted months in a pointless feud with Bray Wyatt before doing random tag team shit on Smackdown to kill TV time. I don’t even know the last time Knight won a match but it’s been months.

I honestly just feel bad for fans who think LA Knight is about to win the Money in the Bank when they are clearly going to push Rey Mysterio’s son as the biggest heel while LA loses more matches.

Don Callis becomes a star

Don Callis has been in the wrestling industry far longer than I have been alive and I don’t mean to diminish everything he’s accomplished up until this point but what he and Takeshita did on Dynamite this week is what separates guys in the wrestling industry and fucking STARS.

Callis’s entire run in AEW always seemed like Kenny Omega doing a favor to an old-timer he respects. Omega never needed Callis to be his mouthpiece and it was more of the visuals of the big heel with the heel manager. Their relationship wasn’t important or crucial to any stories until now.

We’ve seen Paul Heyman’s ability to turn Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns into the biggest heels in the industry. Callis is currently making Takeshita into the baddest dude in AEW who is being dropped into the middle of the hottest feud in wrestling. Callis is making Takeshita stand tall above guys like Kenny Omega, Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson. That is rarified air.

AEW is on fire right now and Phil Brooks is coming to fuck alllll that up with lazy botches, boring promos and immediately getting injured after stealing a championship from a far more deserving wrestler.
