The 5 Worst Head Coaches Heading into the 2022 NFL Season

worst head coaches

It’s way more fun to mock the worst head coaches in the NFL than it is for me to sit here and write “Andy Reid is really good”. Go read that boring shit at ESPN if you need it.

Here are the 5 worst head coaches in the NFL:

1. Matt Rhule

In 2020, there was a bidding war between the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants to hire Matt Rhule. Here’s what an NFL scout said regarding Rhule’s potential as an NFL head coach.

“He’s got an NFL mind and well-run program and seems to have every small detail covered. He’s got a little Coughlin in him. The Giants will like that.”

Very interesting way to describe a coach leaving college football with a 47-43 win-loss record and leaving Baylor football with a 19-20 win-loss record in 3 seasons. Rhule was the assistant offensive line coach in the NFL for one year and somehow managed to trick teams into believing he was qualified to become a head coach.

Fast forward a few years and the assistant offensive line coach led a Carolina Panthers team that allowed the 5th most sacks in 2021. Rhule has won only 5 games in back-to-back seasons with no signs of progress or growth.

2. Mike McCarthy

Whether it comes down to managing the game clock or deciding what to do on 4th down, Mike McCarthy is atrocious at in-game decision-making. For the first time in a long time, McCarthy doesn’t need to worry about the offensive play calling in Dallas so you’d think that would free him to fully focus on the little details but nope. Critical thinking skills were not bullet-pointed on McCarthy’s resume. Don’t be shocked when this team leads the NFL in penalties again this season.

3. Josh McDaniels

99% of Bill Belichick’s former assistants leave New England and get exposed as frauds but for some reason, Josh McDaniels and the Raiders are still talked about as heavy players in a stacked AFC West.

It’s even stranger because we seem to have all forgotten McDaniels had his chance as a head coach with the Denver Broncos which was an absolute disaster that started from his very first conversation with starting QB, Jay Cutler, that ended with Cutler hanging up pissed because McDaniels wouldn’t deny rumors he wanted to bring in Patriots backup QB, Matt Cassell.

In his first year in Denver with the team desperately needed help on defense, McDaniels selected running back Knowshon Moreno one pick above 3 Pro Bowl defenders—Brian Orakpo, Malcolm Jenkins and Brian Cushing. Sick.

I could keep going and mention his war with Brandon Marshall but the point is, McDaniels has no idea how to interact with humans but I guess neither did Jon Gruden so perhaps McDaniels is perfect for the Raiders.

4. Dan Campbell

Dan Campbell seems like a nice guy and the Detroit Lions aren’t the most talented team in the league but uh, as far as coaching goes, Campbell ain’t it. Spoiler: Sean McVay is the no. 1 coach in the league. He coached Jared Goff to a Super Bowl. Dan Campbell got his hands on Goff and barely squeezed 3 wins out of him.

5. Robert Saleh

I have no idea if Saleh is a good head coach or not. Something about putting on those Jets colors makes people forget everything they know about football but if I’m excluding first-year head coaches, Saleh has to be at the bottom of this list for winning just 4 games last season.

Plus, if I’m projecting forward to 2022 success, something tells me that his star QB having incredibly public and incredibly messy breakups with girlfriends isn’t going to translate to a lot of wins. Zach Wilson is the QB1. He’s supposed to be the adult in the room not banging all the adults in the room.

And now here are some random thoughts about various other coaches around the league. This was originally supposed to be a rank of all 32 but like, do you really want to read my attempt to split hairs about Sean McDermott and John Harbaugh? Is that why you come to Deadseriousness? So I can break down their 3rd down efficiencies?

Dennis Allen

Dennis Allen is a bad bitch. He’s probably never going to match the success of his predecessor, Sean Payton and the Saints will most likely disappoint this season but Dennis Allen can hold his head up high knowing that he’s got that gorilla glue grip bussy.

Brian Daboll

Go, Giants!

Matt Eberflus

Matt Eberflus is a name I don’t think I’ll be attempting to pronounce out loud until like, at least week 10 when I am for sure for sure for sure for sure I am saying it correctly.

Bill Belichick

The New England Patriots somehow made the playoffs last season with a roster full of guys you wouldn’t recognize without their jerseys on. Like, if anyone on that team cut you off in traffic, you would not hesitate to get out of the car shouting at them and if they said they played for the Patriots you’d roast them for lying.

Last season, New England had the no. 2 defense in the NFL but they lost pro bowler, JC Jackson, to the Chargers. Also don’t love Belichick trusting Matt Patricia and Joe Judge to run his offense. Especially considering one is a defensive coordinator and the other had the worst offense in the league last year but go off, king.

Kliff Kingsbury

The Cardinals seemed determined to alienate and embarrass their star quarterback who was an MVP candidate last season prior to suffering an ankle injury. The team made Kyler sign a new contract that required 4 hours of ‘independent study’. I don’t know what’s more disrespectful: making his contract demand that he look over film on his own implying that he doesn’t do that shit already OR requiring only 4 hours to just subtly jab at him for no reason at all.

Kingsbury wasn’t done poking and needling at his star QB. In the Cardinals preseason debut, challenged Murray’s playcalling ability as the two switched responsibilities in the 4th quarter. It went bad. The Kyler-led offense gained a grand total of zero yards. Nice, Kliff. You got him. He’s dumb and you’re smart. Congrats.

Sean McVay

2 Super Bowl appearances in his 5-year career. 1 of those is with Jared Goff. This is the best head coach in the NFL. Duh.
