Let’s Talk About Colin Kaepernick’s Workout With The Raiders

Last month, the Las Vegas Raiders brought in Colin Kaepernick for a workout. ESPN reported that his workout was ‘positive’, whatever that means. There was zero video footage and not a contract offer in sight. No other teams contacted Kaepernick. But it was positive. Sure.

This whole situation smelled fishy from the beginning. The Raiders already have Derek Carr, Jarrett Stidham, Nick Mullens and Chase Garbers on the roster. There are 4 quarterbacks in Las Vegas. Why would they even consider bringing in a 5th QB, especially a 34-year-old who hasn’t thrown a pass in the NFL since 2016?

Here’s what new Raiders head coach, Josh McDaniels, said about bringing in a retired player to workout:

“If there’s an opportunity to improve the team, we said it from day one that we would look at every opportunity. He’s not the first player that we looked at, not the last one. There’s going to be a lot of people that come in and out of this building and have an opportunity to make an impression. … If we make a decision to add somebody to the team, then we’ll do it.”

Reminder, only 1 quarterback gets to play on Sunday. Shit, only two quarterbacks get to participate in practice throughout the week. There aren’t enough reps for 3 or 4 quarterbacks and there certainly aren’t enough reps for 5 fucking QBs on your roster.

Las Vegas is about to battle in an AFC West that is stacked with excellent quarterback play. They have to face Justin Herbert, Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes two times each this year. All of their offensive efforts should be focused on elevating Derek Carr to that level of greatness. Seems counterproductive to instead, hold open auditions for his backup’s backup.

If Colin Kaepernick was signed right now, he’d be the 10th oldest quarterback in the NFL. I know older guys like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are proving you can still age and dominate games but those guys didn’t take 6 years off from professional sports.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the reason why Kaepernick has been gone for 6 years.

NFL owners kicked him out of the league because he knelt during the national anthem and said cops were bad which apparently is the worst possible thing you can do. If Kap had simply jerked off onto the woman who performed the national anthem instead of knelt, he would’ve been given the biggest contract in league history.

So why did the Raiders hold this weird workout?

It’s possible Las Vegas had a genuine interest in doing some faux good deed by being the team that brings Kaepernick back to the NFL even though it’s 2022 and no one on Earth believes Kap should be on a roster anymore. The team wouldn’t even get a real boost of positive press. The culture moves so quickly these days, that Kaepernick is irrelevant now.

Earlier this week, Hall of Fame defensive lineman, Warren Sapp sat down with DJ Vlad and said he heard the tryout was a ‘disaster’. Kaepernick’s agent has denied Sapp’s claim and said his client impressed everyone which is the thing your agent is supposed to say.

But let’s say Warren Sapp is correct and it was truly a putrid attempt at football. Perhaps the team told ESPN reporters that it was a great workout so they can maintain positive PR for bringing him in while simultaneously leaking out how terrible he was so they can embarrass him.

Like, why is Warren Sapp sitting down for interviews and with DJ Vlad of all people? DJ Vlad is famous for being a cop. He essentially interrogates rappers and pressures them to go into exact detail on any and all crimes they may have committed. Interesting to have a cop help spread the idea that the guy who protested the police had a terrible workout. Interesting.

This whole situation is nasty. No one should be calling Colin Kaepernick’s phone with the goal of him throwing a football. Whether it’s the NFL, XFL, USFL or your local flag football team. It’s been 6 long ass years. It’s over.

The Las Vegas Raiders don’t need Kaepernick. They have Chase freakin Garbers, baybeeee.
