The Detroit Tigers have designated OF James Outman for assignment, demoting him to Triple-A Toledo, where he belongs.
Outman’s second DFA of the season—first, EJECTO SEATO CUZ’d by the Minnesota Twins, claimed by Detroit.
Outman hit .183 in 100 plate appearances.
5 homers, 2 stolen bases, played every position in the field, +2 DRS and +2 OAA—an average Joe defender out there. Replaceable.
James Outman is the Homeboy Sandman of striking out swinging. 42% K rate this season—a career-worst 20.1% swinging strike rate. Colson Montgomery’s 18% swinging strike rate leads the league among qualified batters. Outman’s worse than the worst.
Tigers centerfielders rank 25th in OPS. Rookie and top prospect Max Clark’s taken the job, hitting 87 wRC+, better than Outman, everyone is—but not good enough for the Tigers to ignite the winning streak they need to earn a championship lotto ticket.
Honestly, James Outman never stood a chance. That’s not the name of a Hall of Fame ball player. That’s the name of the slumping first baseman from the local team in Hey Arnold, giving Arnold and Stinky and them lessons.
He’s named like a salesman not selling shit. Jack Lemmon vibes.
Can the Tigers still make the playoffs?
Only 4 games out of the final wild card spot, but they play in the AL Central—all these teams capable of collapsing like Drake when he has to wait on the tarmac, inside his private jet, as inclement weather passes—you guys don’t understand how hard he has it.
Removing James Outman is addition by subtraction. Tigers ended a 6-game losing streak the first game without Outman—4-1 victory over first-place Tampa Bay. Max Clark, his 21-year-old rookie replacement, hit a home run the day Outman’s loser energy left the outfield.
Now that the worst player in baseball is gone, and also the best pitcher gone, time for the Tigers to surge to an ALDS loss.
