Deadseriousness 2021-22 NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets

Biggest storyline of the season

I mean like, I can’t even be cute and talk about injuries or defense as if Kyrie Irving is one week away from hosting a Trump rally in Williamsburg. It’s tough for a 29-year old who clearly cares about good causes to have this identity crisis so publicly when he’s obviously searching for what exactly it is he truly believes in.

Buuuuut planting your flag in the anti-vax hill instantly eliminates all sympathy for this asshole. Kyrie is fighting against a vaccine mandate that exists exclusively to protect citizens from a deadly virus.  Do you think New York business owners love losing dollars from people who are too stubborn to get medicine? This isn’t some big conspiracy, losers. People are dying. Daily. Hourly.

Key Players

Kyrie Irving: Uncle Drew recorded the 13th 50-40-90 season in NBA history. Just elite shooting numbers from a guy who will be watching the Nets play at the bar next to me.

LaMarcus Aldridge: His heart exploded last April and for some reason, doctors are allowing him to return to a sport that requires your heart not exploding.

Blake Griffin: Thank god, Blake Griffin returned to Brooklyn so he can appear on more Barstool podcasts and local stand-up open mics while he rehabs his inevitable knee injury that will keep him out for 2 weeks.

James Harden: Lot of jokes about Kyrie sitting out to screw Harden’s chance at winning a title but Harden has shown us who he is year after year. The beard is HYPED that Kyrie is out of the way and he can hold the ball for 23 seconds of the shot clock just dribbling at staring at his defender’s jersey number.

Kevin Durant: Giannis just had a historic playoff run. Kawhi just had a historic playoff run a couple seasons earlier. All while NBA Twitter points out that Durant’s historic playoff runs have been with Steph Curry. Yes, he has Harden with him but Harden’s never done shit in the postseason so this is his chance to surpass them and put himself up there alone with LeBron.

Paul Millsap: Nothing to say here. Just realized that Paul Millsap is on the Brooklyn Nets.

Ok.

How the Nets can win the title

The Nets don’t need Kyrie in order to win a championship. They have scorers left and right. But he has a big fat contract going to waste. If they can flip that for another great player, perhaps a defender. Say, someone like Ben Simmons.

Simmons is the perfect fit for Brooklyn. He’s made it quite clear that he has zero desire to score any points so he can simply distribute to Durant and defend Giannis on the other end. Meanwhile, Kyrie can have intelligent conversations with Andre Drummond.
