Last time we saw Brittney Griner, she just scored 28 of the least important points as the Phoenix Mercury lost Game 4 to the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Finals. Now, she’s in the middle of an international war because she had to smuggle home some weak ass Soviet kush.
The Russian Federal Customs Service said Saturday that its officials had detained an American basketball player after finding vape cartridges that contained hashish oil in her luggage at the Sheremetyevo airport near Moscow.
The Customs Service said in a statement that the player had won two Olympic gold medals with the United States, but it did not release the player’s name. The Russian news agency TASS, citing a law enforcement source, identified the player as Brittney Griner, a seven-time W.N.B.A. All-Star center for the Phoenix Mercury. Griner, 31, won gold medals with the U.S. women’s national basketball team in 2021 and 2016.
Griner could be facing up to 10 years in prison for her attempt to smuggle some vape oils back home from Russia. It always fascinates me how Americans treat Russia like this disgusting evil country where the citizens have no freedoms under the thumb of their villain leader, Vladimir Putin.
When in actuality, their government behaves the exact same way ours does. We have this amazing technology allowing us mere mortals to carry a small device in our pockets to be used in order to get high as shit anywhere, any time and both the US and Russia are putting people behind bars for simply possessing this marvel of the universe.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to hate on the WNBA once again for how terribly they run this company. They won’t pay their stars more money and it directly ruins their on-the-court product. These players need to spend their offseasons balling in Europe making real dollars and it’s resulted in Breanna Stewart tearing her achilles and now Brittney Griner being locked in Siberia.
Pay these women more. Let people smoke weed. And stop pretending to care about this Russia/Ukraine conflict.
