Bob Huggins is Somehow the Last Person To Find Out We Don’t Use Gay Slurs Anymore

bob huggins

In what should have been a harmless interview with a local Cincinnati radio show, West Virginia head coach, Bob Huggins, was asked if he was recruiting any Xavier players from the transfer portal. Again, should’ve been a harmless response to that.

Uh, that’s not what happened…

Huggins: It was a Crosstown Shootout, yea, no, what it was, was all those fags, those Catholic fags I think

Bill Cunningham the radio host: [long silence] alright

Yike.

You learn a lot about a person by having easily they let slurs fly in random contexts that don’t even make sense. Especially live on a radio show where you can’t even curse and you certainly can’t repeat homophobic slurs on the air.

It’s 2023 and Bob Huggins is still using these slurs to describe people he doesn’t like. I genuinely believe people who have to rely on these lazy ass slurs are low IQ losers who don’t have the brain capacity to come up with anything more clever to say.

Here is the Bob Huggins apology that he immediately had to give if he wants to keep his job at all:

“During the conversation, I used a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase that there is simply no excuse for — and I won’t try to make one here. I deeply apologize to the individuals I have offended, as well as to the Xavier University community, the University of Cincinnati and West Virginia University. As I have shared with my players over my 40 years of coaching, there are consequences for our words and actions, and I will fully accept [anything] coming my way. I am ashamed and embarrassed and heartbroken for those I have hurt. I must do better, and I will.”

Incredible lying. If you listen to that radio clip, Huggins says the word over and over again as if to make the point “yes, I know this is a word I can’t say and I’m intentionally being defiant in saying it here now on this radio show”. But yea, he’s also very sorry, folks.

And this article isn’t being written so that we read about Bob Huggins being an idiot on the radio and then we all can feel superior to him because we aren’t a neanderthal like he is. I’m not about to clutch my pearls and pretend to care about his players being around this type of language as if they didn’t grow up hearing far more terrible things said riding the bus to school every morning growing up.

But I do have to question what type of men are leaving Bob Huggin’s West Virginia team.  I think for the most part, players can separate the stupid politics of their head coaches if they still win basketball games. Like, I’m sure there are plenty of women at LSU who disagree with Kim Mulkey’s bullshit but they’re title contenders every year so you’ll ignore some of the casual homophobia for some playing time.

West Virginia basketball is mid. They finished 19-15 last season and immediately lost in the first round of the NCAA March Madness tournament to Maryland. So if you send your child to Huggins, you are sending him to a bitter old bigot who won’t even help your son get to the NBA. The only positive influence Huggins has on your kid is stopping him from drinking Bud Lights.

I just hope Huggins gets fired and the only available coaching job being at Xavier. That’s the justice we need.
