MLB

The Yankees beat the Sacramento A’s 13-8 Sunday afternoon, thanks to an atom bomb going off in the 3rd inning.

New York scored all 13 of their runs in that 3rd inning on 11 hits.

They had no other hits before or after that inning.

The first 12 hitters who came to the plate in pinstripes reached safely.

That 13-run innings ties for the second-most runs in a single inning in franchise history, behind only Babe Ruth’s 1920 squad that put up 14 in an inning against the Senators. Weak-ass Senators.

They faced two separate pitchers in the inning, starter Jacob Lopez and recently called-up Michael Kelly.

8 of the 9 Yankees in the batting order recorded an RBI.

The only one without—catcher Austin Wells—2 walks and 2 runs scored.

Decent.

Ben Rice Double XP weekend

Yankees 3rd year, left-handed hitting first baseman Ben Rice is having the best season of his life. He’s arguably having the best season in all of baseball.

Rice took advantage of the tee the Athletics set up at home plate in that 3rd inning, a 2-run double followed by a 2-run triple in his second go-round.

Can we take a quick look at Ben Rice’s AL MVP-caliber season so far?

  • 54 games
  • .306 batting average (3rd in AL)
  • 17 homers (3rd in AL)
  • 44 RBIs (1st in AL)
  • .658 slugging (1st in AL)
  • 1.056 OPS (1st in AL)
  • 192 OPS+ (1st in AL

No big deal, the Yankees have the best hitter in baseball on the roster. And Aaron Judge, too.

Will Warren keeps winning

After 3 runs scored early thanks to an error in the outfield, the Yankees 13 runs gave righty Will Warren more than enough space to spend the rest of his Sunday afternoon lounging. Big chillin.

6 hits and 3 runs (zero earned) with 5 Ks and 3 walks through 6 innings to improve to 7-1 on the season.

He and Cam Schlitter now tied for the team lead with 7 wins.

In his 3rd year, Will Warren is on pace to have the best season of his career.

His 117 ERA+, a career-high and his 10.02 Ks/9 is Top 10 in the AL.

The Yankees offense will always be the face of their program.

Chicks dig the long ball, after all.

But their starting pitching has deceived most opposing batting orders.

And now with Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon coming back from injury, Will Warren must continue throwing heat if he wants Boone to keep penciling his name onto the lineup sheet every 5th day (although Ryan Weathers looks like he’ll be the odd man out when Max Fried returns from his IL stint).

Athletics losing ground

After falling 13-8 to the Bronx Bombers, the A’s lost their second consecutive series to fall to 28-31 on the season, 2.5 games behind Seattle for the AL West lead.

Sacramento’s foster children were swept by the Mariners last week before dropping 2 of 3 to the Yankees over the weekend.

The ball club is in stress mode following SP Luis Severino leaving Friday’s game after 23 pitches, set for a trip to the 15-Day IL nursing a shoulder strain.

That’s now the second starting pitcher the A’s lost within a week, losing 31-year-old Aaron Civale to shoulder tendinitis.

Everyone’s shoulder hurts.

The A’s have Monday off before they prepare for 9 games in 9 days without Luis Severino. Swept by Seattle. Gave up 13 runs to the Yankees in one inning, and now they have the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers back-to-back-to-back.

Looks like top pitching prospect Kade Morris will be getting the call-up to come light the beam.

Pray for this man’s shoulder.
