Conflict arises when the team’s grades start to suffer, and so the coach stops them from entering the championship season. Coach Carter is a heartwarming feel-good story that will delight sports fans. If you like basketball and you’re a Samuel L Jackon fan, this just might be your perfect movie.
4 . I, Tonya (2017)
Starring Margot Robbie, I Tonya is a raw and provocative portrayal of the life of figure skater Tonya Harding. In 1991, Harding became the very first American female to finish a triple axel at a figure skating competition. The movie takes a comedy-drama angle, exploring Tonya’s dysfunctional life. The movie shows the toxic relationships with her mother and ex-husband, and the scandal that eventually led to the ruin of her career.
The movie permits the main characters to speak to the audience, whether through mid-scene monologues, or mockumentary-style interviews. If you’re looking for a thought-provoking piece about a former female sports star, this is the movie for you.
5. Raging Bull (1980)
Raging Bull focuses on the story of boxer Jake LaMotta, portrayed by Roberto De Niro. This boxing hit from Martin Scorsese is about toxic masculinity, and all the damage in its path. Jake became a boxing champion back in the 1940s, throughout his life he made and wasted millions. He also had a brief stint as a stand-up comedian, and went to jail for contributing to the prostitution of an underaged girl. 6. The Big Lebowski (1998)
The Big Lebowski is hailed as one of the greatest comedy movies ever. The plot focuses on Jeff Lebowski, a burnout who also goes by the name of ‘The Dude’. Jeff has the same name as a wanted billionaire, a predicament that sends the Dude to the depths of the LA underworld. The movie is about a runway girl, a kidnapping, gangsters, and lots of bowling! With so much going on, there really is something for everyone. The Big Lebowski has a somewhat cult following.
7. A League Of Their Own (1922)
A-League Of Their Own examines the very first female professional baseball league. Here’s a woman-led sports movie that doesn’t take focus on the ‘girl gets man’ trope. The plot focuses around the team winning the big game, and protagonist Kit, and her relationship with her older sister. Some stand-out acting and great casting, A League Of Their Own is one to watch.
8. Whip It (2009)
Directed by Drew Barrymore, Whip It focuses on the story of Bliss, a wannabe roller derby star. Bliss is counting on using the sports world to escape her one-horse town. Whip It is a charming coming-of-age film, about a young girl realizing her dreams. Bliss finds herself having to lie to her parents about her new hobby, finding a new support network in her teammates. The perfect movie for a Sunday afternoon, Whip It is light-hearted and charming.
9. Battle Of The Sexes (2017)
Battle Of The Sexes is a biographical sports movie, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The film is based on a tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King that took place in 1973. In 1970 Jack Kramer organized a tournament, the prize for women was far less than the prize for men, regardless of equal ticket sales. When Kramer points to the inferiority of female tennis games, Gladys and Billie Jean attempt to take matters into their own hands.
10. Any Given Sunday (1999)
D’amato’s team used to be on top, but now they are struggling with constant losses and aging players. At home, D’amato (played by Al Pacino) is trying to come to terms with his failing marriage. Audiences are in for a gripping performance from Al Pacino, the perfect movie to delight any sports fans.
