Should The New York Knicks Trade For Collin Sexton?

collin sexton

Not only are there rumors that the Knicks and Cavaliers are in trade talks to send Collin Sexton to New York but the talks have advanced so far that there are details to the potential deal in place.

It kindaaaa sounds like this deal is already in place but should it be? Does this behoove the Knicks at all?

Let’s start with the negatives because this is Deadseriousness and I hate everything.

Collin Sexton is up for the rookie max extension of $168 million for 5 years. That’s a big chunk of salary given to a 22-year old before he does anything in his career worth that salary.

Here’s what an anonymous scout recently said about Sexton’s personality:

“He’s going to want the max because he thinks he’s the best point guard in the league,’’ one NBA talent man said. “He’s a dominant personality and the feeling is not all the players like him.’’

The Knicks would pretty much be bringing in an asshole onto a roster that overachieved based entirely on effort and team chemistry.

So the question becomes, is Collin Sexton talented enough to overcome the fact that he appears to be a total dick?

First, this is the only way the Knicks can acquire talent. Free agents do not want to sign here. That’s not going to magically change. Players aren’t lining up to team with Julius Randle and Frank Ntilikina, believe it or not.

The Knicks must get clever with trades and this particular trade doesn’t seem too demanding. Kevin Knox is out of the rotation. Obi Toppin seems like a good kid but he’s already OLDER than Collin Sexton is.

And sure, take one of the 2 first-round picks the Knicks have this year. That’s kind of the point in having two picks. It’s to give you leverage in trades.

You also have to take a look at the market. Last summer, Terry Rozier signed a 3-year $56 million contract with the Hornets. He made close to $20 million in his first season. Collin Sexton would be a huge discount considering he’s already a better basketball player than Rozier is.

This season, Collin Sexton averaged 24 points a night with 4.4 assists and 37% shooting from 3. He is astronomically better than the Knicks starting point guard, Elfird fucking Payton. Elfrid is the worst basketball player in the history of history and Sexton would be a major upgrade.

He and RJ Barrett could be the best hot new young backcourt in the NBA.

But most importantly, here’s the last play of Collin’s 20-21 season:

Trade for Collin Sexton yesterday.
