Reading the tea leaves, it appears Jason Kidd will be the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks following the departure of Rick Carlisle.
With zero context, this is a beautiful homecoming for one the best point guards in NBA history to the organization that drafted him and where he won his championship years later thanks to JJ Barea and Jason Terry playing like their children were kidnapped and the only way they’d ever see them again was if they won a title.

He will be tasked with helping Luka Doncic reach his full potential.
On paper, it makes all the sense in the world to assume Jason Kidd—a guy who carved his face onto the Mount Rushmore of point guards—would guide Luka to a similar destiny.
Except Luka is already better than Kidd and being a great player seldom translates into being a great teacher.
Oh, and Luka is a dick who is responsible for the entire Mavericks front office and coaching staff being lit on fire.
Luka will now have to battle Jason Kidd—one of the biggest assholes in NBA history who somehow continues to fail and get more coaching opportunities despite his weird behavior and overall lack of success.
He has a 183-190 win-loss record despite coaching Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in Brooklyn and Giannis in Milwaukee.
And now, Kidd is handed a third coaching opportunity to waste a year or two of Luka’s prime.
Is Jason Kidd, uh, okay?…
When you consider he beat his wife in 2001 and drove drunk into a utility pole in 2012, you might question Jason Kidd’s, uh, emotional well-being.
Compound those off-the-court incidents with all the times he was a straight-up dick during his career—feuding with Jim Jackson, getting Byron Scott fired or dropping Jannero Pargo on his head while he was mid-air going for a layup—perhaps this isn’t a leader of men.
No one is the sum of only the mistakes they made but I’m looking everywhere to find all the positive stories about Kidd’s personality or coaching ability. I’ve found about 20 needles in haystacks but still on the lookout for Kidd’s positive PR.
At the end of the day, no NBA organization deserves to have its superstar and head coach strangle each other live on TV more than the Mavs.
Mavs owner, Mark Cuban, ran a front office where guys were just sexually harassing women left and right as if sniffing a woman’s seat when they went to the bathroom was a job requirement.
This franchise should be burned to the ground and Jason Kidd is one Tito’s and club (no ice) away from doing it this weekend as a celebration for getting hired.
