In Defense of Dillon Brooks

The world has all agreed that they are fed up with Dillon Brooks and all of his antics but the NBA desperately needs more characters like him.

Dillon Brooks is one of the most annoying players in the NBA.

Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies are such a fun team to watch but it’s impossible not to shake your head at Brooks who will do some unbelievably dumb shit at least once a game.

On Thursday night, Dillon Brooks and Donovan Mitchell were both ejected after Brooks punched Mitchell in the balls and the two had a quick shoving match.

With about six minutes left in the third quarter, Brooks drove for a layup and of course, was denied by Evan Mobley.

Mitchell went to save the loose ball when Brooks rolled on the ground closer to him and punched Mitchell in the scrotum.

Here’s what Donovan had to say about the incident after the game:

“That’s just who he is. We’ve seen it a bunch in this league with him. (He) and I have had our personal battles for years. Quite frankly, I’ve been busting his ass for years. Playoffs. Regular season. And the one game he does an all right job on me today, decides to do something like that.

“You know, there’s no place in the game and you’ve gotta protect yourself at the end of the day, but this has been brewing for years, with me, with other guys in the league … this isn’t new. And tonight was just the end of it, but it’s tough when you can’t guard somebody and can’t do something with somebody you gotta resort to that and that’s what he’s done to a lot of players … this is one of those things, that’s what you resort to, and that’s cool, but I’m glad my guys held it down tonight and, you know, had my back throughout the whole thing.”

Everything Mitchell says here is exactly why the NBA needs Dillon Brooks.

Most players in the league are here through some combination of their natural athletic talents and grueling hard work to master their crafts.

But some players make the NBA by the skin of their teeth.

Some guys are playing at the absolute peak of their potential at all times which means there is no room for error.

They have to make plays on the fringes in order to keep their spot because their best isn’t as good as the far superior athletes they’re playing against.

Dillon Brooks has to punch nuts and slam Gary Payton II through the Earth’s crust while he’s going up for a layup because he needs to take advantage of any minor edge he may find.

Here are Brooks’s stats for the season so far:

  • 15.3 points
  • 3.4 rebounds
  • 2.6 assists
  • 39% shooting from the field
  • 31% from 3

Safe to say, he won’t be making any All-Star teams.

Ever.

So he needs to create his own value elsewhere and sometimes that means slapping some nuts and Tombstone piledriving Gary Payton II.

I’m fully aware that it’s not okay to throw low blows and break elbows.

But we’re all fans watching the games.

Who cares about sportsmanship?

Like, I’m not out there competing.

Why would I care if people are being polite to one another?

This is the NBA, not icebreaker night in your freshman dorm.

Personally, I have no desire to watch a quiet basketball game where everyone gets along and shakes hands after.

The NBA needs different personalities.

The NBA needs villains.

The game is better when there’s a wildcard out there DDTing the boring ass All-Stars like Donovan Mitchell.

The NBA is at its best when everyone on Twitter is roasting Shannon Sharpe for trying to fight the entire Grizzlies roster. 1

Dillon Brooks is a sociopath who takes shots with the confidence of Ray Allen but misses all of those shots like Kyrie dodging vaccine mandates.

And the sport is more interesting with him in it.

If the players have a problem with him then they should be handling that themselves.

I’m not a Karen calling the cops when a player does something dirty. If the players on the court aren’t upset enough to swing on Brooks then why should I be upset in my home?

Donovan Mitchell had the chance to handle the Dillon Brooks issue right there on the court but he didn’t and Brooks will be back to diving for people’s legs and I will keep happily watching the Grizzlies throw sand in their opponents’ eyes.

  1. Man, I wish that fight actually happened and the Grizzlies stomped him out.
