Girl’s JV basketball is often prettyyyy tough to watch. Well, let me make it clear: ALL JV sports are tough to watch. The best kids are playing for private teams outside of school. The good kids are on varsity and JV is left with the kids who don’t care enough to practice and get better or they can’t control their bodies because they’re still going through puberty.
Churchland High School JV girl’s basketball coach, Arlisha Boykins, wanted to make the game more interesting for the parents and boyfriends in attendance so she suited up to put on an All-Star show for the folks.
Let’s see how she performed:
Arlisha Boykins, a 22-year-old assistant coach on the Churchland junior varsity girls basketball team in Portsmouth, suited up for the Truckers while a teenage student-athlete was out of town at a club basketball tournament, parents of the girl told WAVY TV 10.
In video footage from the Jan. 21 game, which took place in Suffolk against Nansemond River, Boykins can be seen wearing a black No. 1 jersey for Churchland while playing in the contest.
Boykins, who was going up against 14-and-15-year-old girls, recorded a block and drove to the basket for a layup in highlights obtained by WAVY. She was also seen interacting with the team, shooting free throws and at one point, dove into the stands for a loose ball.
Something you don’t see every day. An assistant coach on a JV girls basketball team impersonated a 13-year-old player on the team in a game. The coach is no longer an employee of the Portsmouth School District. @WAVY_News

So from what I can gather, the one player on the team good enough to play on a travel team was out of town at a tournament and Arlisha Boykins used this as an opportunity to suit up for the team one last time and give herself one last run with the gals.
If you watch the highlights, she isn’t, uh, that much better than the girls a decade younger than her which might affect her coaching credibility going forward. At 22, you should be crossing these pre-teens up.
But at the same time, she did dive for a loose ball so she practices what she preaches. The Chicago Bulls would respect Billy Donovan more if they saw him put his body on the line for a meaningless loose ball.
Unfortunately, the Churchland girl’s JV basketball team has elected to forgo the remainder of the season and have forfeited the year because I guess it’s super against the rules for adults to run with the second unit.
Hopefully this school retires Boykins’s jersey and hangs it in the rafters. We will never forget her 2 points and 1 block against the local girl scouts.
