Are We Sure The Giants Got Daniel Jones Enough Help This Offseason?

As teams start revving up their preseason minicamps, it’s clear the NFL offseason is over. All of the moves have been made. All of the players have been drafted. And now you look at the New York Giants—a team whose leading receiver last season was Richie James—and realize they didn’t really do much to make life easier for Daniel Jones.

Last season’s offensive success was thanks almost entirely to the rushing combination of Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley. The Giants had the 4th best rushing attack in the NFL last year. Barkley had the best season of his career proving how incredible he is when he’s healthy. He had career highs in rush attempts, yards and first downs.

And Barkley isn’t back with the team yet because he and the front office can’t agree on a contract extension. So the biggest offensive catalyst from last season isn’t signing the franchise tag so how have the Giants improved the offense since they don’t seem to think Saquon is a crucial part of this?

Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, David Sills, Sterling Shepard and Wan’Dale Robinson are all coming back. Sick.

The Giants signed the Colts no. 2 receiver, Parris Campbell. Parris had 63 catches for 623 yards and 3 touchdowns. Sick. He fits right into this wide receiver room full of no. 2 and no. 3 receivers. They also picked up Jameson Crowder who missed most of the 2022 season with an ankle injury. I, uh, I don’t think Crowder is going to become Daniel Jones’s no. 1 target.

Every year, we see organizations go out of their way to get star receivers for their young QBs. The Cowboys traded for Amari Cooper. The Browns traded for Odell Beckham. The Bills traded for Stefon Diggs. The Dolphins traded for Tyreek Hill. The Raiders traded for Davante Adams. The Eagles traded for AJ Brown. The Cardinals traded for DeAndre Hopkins. The 49ers traded for Christian McCaffrey.

The New York Giants trade for—*Googles*—Darren Waller. Ok.

The Giants desperately need a big tight end in the middle of the field to help bail Daniel Jones out when he’s bootlegging out of the pocket and his receivers are inevitably locked up. I’m just not sure 31-year-old Darren Waller is the solution to this problem considering he’s been injured in back-to-back seasons and caught a grand total of 28 passes last season.

The only hope on this roster is 3rd round draft pick, Jalin Hyatt, secretly being a winning lottery ticket.

Jalin Hyatt could be the steal of the draft or just another guy who drops passes like every receiver did last season.

I reckon that’s the biggest problem. The Giants didn’t take a big swing at a star playmaker. They are trying to win on the fringes with 3rd round draft picks and injury-prone washed-up tight ends. It felt like Daniel Jones proved he was a top-15 QB in this league and was deserving of the big contract. And the franchise is treating him like a Top 1 QB who doesn’t need overwhelming talent around him because he can make the guys around him better. I’m not so sure that’s the case.

Jones needs help. But none of it matters because he’s not getting it. Please come back, Saquon. This team signed Jameson Crowder, man. The Eagles and Cowboys are forming super teams and the Giants have Sterling Shepard coming back from injury. Yike.
