Former Spur and current lunatic on the Atlanta Hawks, Dejounte Murray, went on Stephen Jackson’s podcast or TV show or whatever he’s doing on Showtime and told the story about his final days in San Antonio with the lovely Tony Parker.
“That was the year I took the job from Tony [Parker]…I know he didn’t like it cuz if he liked it, he would have mentored me the way he should have. He wouldn’t have went to [the Hornets].”

Apparently, Gregg Popovich called both Tony Parker and Dejounte Murray into his office to let them know Murray would become the new starting point guard for the team, and shockingly, Tony Parker didn’t handle the news well.
The greatest coach of all time decided to tell a guy he coached for 17 consecutive years and won 4 NBA Championships with—that he would be sitting on the bench watching a teenager take his job. Oh, and the teenager taking his job was in the room for the conversation. Incredible way to really strengthen the team chemistry. Shocked the Spurs haven’t won in a decade. Popovich seems to really understand people.
Tony Parker would eventually be traded to the Charlotte Hornets so he could average the most meaningless 9.5 points per game in NBA history.
Quick shout out to the 2018-19 Charlotte Hornets. It’s a shame 20 year old Miles Bridges learned more from Parker than Kemba Walker. Tony Parker is an all-time great and all-time shit teammate.
Parker won 4 NBA titles and was the Finals MVP in 2007.
In 2007 I was downloading This Is Why I’m Hot as my new ringtone. In 2007 Tony Parker dropped 30 points on LeBron’s head.
In his prime, he was the best at both getting to the rim and finishing around the rim. Every layup went in. He never hit the backboard too hard or it rolled off the rim. If it left his fingertips, it was going in the hoop.
He also got his eye busted at the club when Drake and Chris Brown were fighting over Rihanna1.
For some reason, Parker’s legacy hasn’t been negatively affected by all the nonsense he was in during his playing days.
If James Harden got hit in the eye with a bottle because two rappers were fighting, I think Sixers fans would genuinely consider burning his home to the ground. And Harden is an astronomically better basketball player than Parker ever was.
The biggest blemish on Parker’s career, and the real reason he is easily one of the worst teammates ever, is having an affair with Brent Barry’s wife.
He cheated on Eva Longoria with Rick Barry’s son’s wife, Erin. Ew.
What a happy family.
You know how bad of a guy you have to be to make me agree with Dejounte Murray??
We should also have a conversation about the way San Antonio’s dynasty ended.
Kawhi Leonard didn’t just randomly force his way out of town.
People use the fact that Kawhi is a bit eccentric to make it seem like some isolated incident but the entire Spurs organization tried to force him to play on a leg that he knew was simply not healthy enough to play on and Kawhi was turned into the villain.
No one should be surprised to hear Dejounte Murray say that he was stereotyped as a bad hood dude when he arrived in the building and the Spurs thought he was some project that they had to save from his homies and the streets.
The San Antonio Spurs have been irrelevant for the past few years because basketball has past them by and they’re being run by a geriatric wino who refuses to just retire because he thinks he has to sit in a chair backward and save the black kids from a life of crime.
Tony Parker and the Spurs deserve each other.
