Last week, the LA Rams sent four draft picks to the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire 2-time All-Pro CB Trent McDuffie.
And now they’re showering him in cash.

25-year old Trent McDuffie is now the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. Sauce Gardner in Indianapolis and Derek Stingley Jr in Houston are the 2nd and 3rd highest paid in the league.
Obvious move for Los Angeles, especially with most of their secondary hitting free agency and Darious Williams announcing his retirement. Like their Jalen Ramsey trade in 2019 that led to a Super Bowl trophy in year two, Trent McDuffie makes them the NFC favorites Week 1.
In the last 2 seasons, McDuffie has allowed 6.0 yards per target in coverage—3rd best among defensive backs who have been targeted at least 150 times.
And don’t sleep on McDuffie’s genuine desire to play in LA.
In August, while hosting a back-to-school event in Kansas City, Missouri, McDuffie was asked what other team he’d like to play for if it wasn’t the Chiefs.
“You’re going to get me in trouble,” McDuffie said with a smile. “Let’s think. If I could play for another team, I’d probably want to play close to my family, so that would probably be the L.A. Rams so that my family could come see every single game.” (ESPN)
What’s next for the Kansas City Chiefs?
The Chiefs enter this offseason more than $57 million over the salary cap. After missing the playoffs, Kansas City is shedding salaries, mass layoffs like a movie studio that just got purchased by an oligarch.
Kansas City with too many holes in their armor to funnel their few remaining dollars to one, singular CB—when Patrick Mahomes is playing without an offensive line, a physically-decayed tight end who sponsors won’t allow retirement because they have more products to move through he and Taylor’s version, and their head coach may be on the wrong side of the present.
It’s time for the Chiefs to take the draft seriously again, maybe find the next Trent McDuffie.
