The 2024-25 NBA season started with the Boston Celtics blowing out the New York Knicks 132-109, tying the record for the most made 3’s in a game and creating the avalanche of indolent, concern-trolling about TV ratings and the NBA product being watered down by too many perimeter shot attempts.
The NBA is fine but the Boston Celtics are a problem.
They found a way to fill their roster with 8-9 guys who can all dribble, pass and shoot at a high level and somehow manage to afford all of them. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are the two highest-paid NBA players ever. And Boston has no problem building a stacked roster around them.
But we are so close to this Boston Celtics nonsense coming to an end…
The sale of the Boston Celtics will ramp up this week as the first round of bids for the franchise will be submitted by Thursday, Jan. 23. The Celtics are expected to receive at least four bids from investment groups vying to purchase the team, and John Henry and Fenway Sports Group are expected to be in the mix according to one report. If the Boston Red Sox ownership is buying the Celtics—then we can go ahead and pencil this team in the lottery the moment John Henry’s signature hits paper.
Why the Boston Celtics are about to disappear
The Boston Red Sox haven’t finished above .500 in 3 straight seasons as the team’s ownership has become penny-pinching cheap twerps pulling their pockets inside out whenever the waiter places the bill in front of them.
The Fenway Sports Group has evolved past the desire to win.
The FSG currently owns RFK Racing, Liverpool FC, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Red Sox, Fenway South, the Salem Red Sox, 80% of NESN, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh and The Boston Globe.
They recognize these brands essentially pay for themselves.
People are paying to see the Red Sox, Penguins and Liverpool whether they have the highest payroll in their leagues or not. The Boston Celtics perfectly fit FSG’s plan.
Get a couple good players and piece together the rest of the team with EBT.
They’re never going to make less money. They’ll only make more money with reduced salary costs.
Obviously, I don’t love the idea of an ownership group joining the NBA knowing they’ll almost certainly be uncompetitive. Too many wealthy owners with no interest in winning games exist in sports.
New Orleans is run by people who also seem to sneak off to the bathroom riiiiiiight when the waitress comes to take a credit card. It sucks.
But the Boston Celtics are ruining the NBA—or more realistically—ruining the discourse surrounding the league.
The Celtics currently have the 3rd highest payroll in the league. Fenway Sports Group is buying the team and selling Jaylen Brown for first-round pick swaps and salary relief before they even pop the champagne to celebrate the team purchase.
Son congratulations to NBA fans. This may be the last year the Celtics just stand 5 guys around the perimeter and chuck threes for two straight hours.
We’re about to see if Jayson Tatum, Derrick White and LiAngelo Ball can win a championship.
