CTE Made David Carr Racist

Last season, Jalen Hurts led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl. This season, he is the MVP favorite as the Eagles have the best record in the entire NFL. Yet there are still people who believe this team is winning despite Hurts rather than because of him.

One of those vocal doubters is former NFL QB, David Carr, went on the NFL Network to suggest the Eagles should look to bench Jalen Hurts for Marcus fucking Mariota.

Should the Eagles bench Jalen Hurts?

Again, the Eagles are the no. 1 seed in the NFC and there are rumors they’re going to sign Ndamukong Suh soon.

They are AT LEAST making it to the NFC Championship game to face the 49ers or Cowboys.

There is no reason to even consider benching him.

David Carr starts by claiming he thinks Hurts isn’t fully healthy and the Eagles are a worse team if he can’t lead their running game which is a decent take, I reckon.

Injured players aren’t as good as healthy ones.

Fascinating analysis.

But then Carr goes further and wildly claims Jalen Hurts needs to be healthy to run the ball because he can’t even read NFL defenses.

The team is 10-2.

They are embarrassing teams weekly but Hurts should be benched for Marcus Mariota because Mariota is soooo much better at scanning an NFL defense.

Is Marcus Mariota even good?

Mariota has had opportunities in Tennesee, Las Vegas and Atlanta.

All of those chances led him to being a backup in Philadelphia. Nothing in Mariota’s career should make anyone believe he is this advanced football mind.

I’d describe his playing style as blacksmith-esque as his game is almost entirely physical like hammering a sheet of metal over an anvil over and over and over again.

What a great read of the defense.

In 2017, Mariota threw the third most interceptions behind only Cam Newton and the great, DeShone Kizer.

Neither of those guys are even in the NFL anymore.

And no one would notice if Mariota was gone either.

So why is David Carr saying this?

There are a few things actively going on here. Walk with me.

The NFL media is full of lazy and/or stubborn folks who latch onto a popular narrative being shared about a player and they either don’t watch enough games to update their opinions or they simply don’t want to change their minds because they don’t want faceless/nameless nobodies to bother them on Twitter.

Jalen Hurts was benched in the college football championship game for Tua Tagovailoa FIVE YEARS AGO and some people still believe Hurts is incapable of winning the ‘big game’.

The man went to the Super Bowl last season and finished 2nd in MVP voting.

He’s about to do the same thing this year.

Even though it feels like NFL franchises have swallowed their prejudices and preconceived notions on what they believe black quarterbacks are capable of, David Carr still talks like the old execs who genuinely convinced themselves that black guys are inherently dumber than white players.

But I want to shoot David Carr some bail. He’s a former Giant after all. Actually, it makes total sense he played for the Giants. The New York Giants were the last team in the NFL to start a black QB.

As the Houston Texans first-ever franchise QB, Carr was subject to the worst offensive line ever constructed resulting in Carr breaking the single-season sack record.

He led the NFL in getting sacked 3 times. Defensive ends were dribbling this man’s head against the turf all Sunday long.

CTE is real.

It made Junior Seau suicidal.

It made Antonio Brown the most annoying human on the planet.

It made Aaron Hernandez gay.

And it’s making David Carr racist.

Football is a sport where we watch grown men piledriver each other until their brains hurt and then when they retire, we listen to their takes as if we didn’t just watch their brains leaking out of their helmets their whole careers.

Can’t wait for Nick Sirriani to sit down with his future Hall of Fame quarterback to tell him he’s being benched for a guy who went 5-8 last season with Atlanta because of some bullshit about reading a defense. If Jalen Hurts cares about winning so much, he’ll be fine with it.
