When an NBA player struggles and turns into the butt of every Twitter joke, there hits an inevitable tipping point when it is no longer funny. That accelerates when the player being clowned has to speak out and discuss how the jokes are affecting his family. Here’s Russell Westbrook passionately explaining how much the nickname ‘Westbrick’ has affected him and his family:
“I stand behind my wife with how she’s feeling…it’s reached a point where it’s really weighing on my family.” @russwest44 shares his thoughts on the comments made by his wife saying she and her family are “harassed on a daily basis”. pic.twitter.com/ize5TLvVnb

It truly sucks knowing Westbrook’s family is being harassed because he isn’t performing well on a basketball court. At the end of the day, this is all super low stakes. Your mood may be altered by your favorite team winning or losing but ultimately, it’s still just a game for entertainment and to help kill two hours before we go to bed and wake up in the morning to go back to our hell jobs.
No one should have to receive death threats or be bullied in school because their spouse or father isn’t playing his little game very well.
But I’m not into blaming an entire fanbase on the actions of a few weird teenagers who think calling LeBron James ‘LeMickey’ because he won a ring in a bubble is like, the coolest and funniest insult ever. “ratio”, they shout having never seen a tit they didn’t Google.
I’m not going to suddenly stop making fun of Russell Westbrook because a handful of losers took things too far. Just look at this sequence of basketball and try to say something positive about his performance:

Since the All-Star break, Westbrook is shooting 9% from 3. NINE PERCENT. There is no guard in the NBA who can miss as many shots as Russ does and still remain on an NBA roster let alone get meaningful playing time.
Personally, I’m under the belief if you want people to stop calling you Westbrick you should stop bricking every shot you take. It’s not even like his jumpers are rimming out. Every time the ball leaves his hands, it ends up exploding off the backboard.
People believe Westbrook should be coming off the bench but that means he’d still be checking into games which is a bad thing. At this point in his career, Westbrook is basically a center who defenders can leave wide open outside of the paint. He’s Nerlens Noel with an MVP trophy on his mantle.
He adds nothing defensively. He is frequently standing in the wrong spot or he’s chasing steals that leave him totally out of position and causes an aging Lakers roster to always be on time with their rotations which isn’t something LeBron James is capable of doing.
The 2021-22 NBA season is coming to an end. Westbrook isn’t going to suddenly learn how to shoot a basketball at his big age. Let’s all just enjoy his hilarious missed shots while we still can before it’s too late and GMs stop tricking themselves into trading for him. Let’s also leave his family out of this because none of this even matters. And most importantly, let’s keep calling him Westbrick.
