After trading for Luka Doncic, the Lakers had a midseason surge to the top of the standings but cooled off just in time to be eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round in just 5 games.
LeBron James enters this season with a player option, allowing him to become a free agent and seek a new home if he determines he has a better chance of winning a championship elsewhere.
According to The Athletic, people in LeBron’s camp have not ruled out the idea of James changing teams.
“But if he decides to play longer and wants a Lakers extension to go along with that choice, then team sources say that conversation will begin with a familiar question: Is he still happy as a Laker?
“Ever since James came to town in 2018, his relationship with the organization has hinged on the answer to that question. If the answer is yes this time, then there’s a discussion to be had on that front. But if it’s not, then the prospect of him finishing his career elsewhere could be in play.”
Since leaving Miami, LeBron has reminded his employers that he keeps a packed bag by the front door, ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
So let’s wildly speculate what teams LeBron James should consider joining:
Oklahoma City
If LeBron wants to win a championship, joining the back-to-back Western Conference 1 seed would be a good place to start. He’d be surrounded by young wolves willing to do all the dirty work LeBron’s old ass cannot, like playing defense.
Milwaukee Bucks
If Milwaukee is dead set on keeping Giannis shackled in Wisconsin for the remainder of his career, they’ll have to do more than acquire Kyle Kuzma. LeBron James could be an easy upgrade over Brook Lopez and he and Giannis can cruise through an Eastern Conference full of bums.
Dallas Mavericks
I don’t know how close LeBron is with former co-workers but Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving are sitting in Dallas, waiting for LeBron to fill the Luka Doncic-sized hole that, surprisingly, Naji Marshall was unable to fit into.
Cleveland Cavaliers
