There’s Only One Reason Why The Giants Shouldn’t Bring Back Daniel Jones Next Season

And 3 Takeaways From The New York Giants Week 8 Loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers

daniel jones

Daniel Jones sucks.

We no longer need to debate this with hypotheticals about healthy offensive lines and better receivers. He’s had 6 years to prove he can play at a high level for 17 weeks out of the year and he cannot.

Two weeks ago, Jones was benched for Drew Lock and on Monday night, Jones committed back-to-back turnovers in the 4th quarter to lose.

Daniel Jones simply isn’t good enough.

His lack of confidence makes him hold the ball longer than he needs to. Every pass he throws makes his receivers awkwardly slow down or turn around in the middle of routes or catch from unorthodox angles.

Just once I’d love to see him lead his receiver so they can continue running full speed and jet to the endzone.

I can scream and yell about how much Jones sucks but as we approach the end of the Daniel Jones era, I just want to appreciate the guy instead of kicking his back in on the way out.

Jones should never have been selected with the no. 6 pick.

He was doomed from the start. The NFL is fucking hard. And oftentimes, guys are taken at the top of the draft to teams with no supporting infrastructure in place.

Whether it’s close-minded coaches who have their styles and refuse to adjust to their specific personnel or offensive lines full of guys who consistently need help getting to their feet after being bulldozed by pass rushers or a group of receivers who spend all game standing directly next to cornerbacks—young quarterbacks are treated like saviors, come to rescue them for all of their previous awful decisions.

Daniel Jones never had an opportunity to succeed.

He didn’t make anyone better but no one helped make him better either.

His best receivers were Sterling Shephard and Darius Slayton. Outside of Andrew Thomas, who just got here, Jones had a bunch of bums allowing pass rushers to walk into sacks.

Jones has had his ass beat standing back there. A broken clavicle. Pinched nerve in his neck. Pinched nerve in his neck again. Torn ACL.

And he comes back every single time, lowering his head into linebackers and hanging in the pocket to continue being crushed play-after-play.

His toughness can never be questioned.

We just watched Anthony Richardson take himself out for a play because he needed to sit for a sec to catch his breath.

Daniel Jones has never quit on a fanbase that would storm the Giants facility today and hang him like Mike Pence.

Sure, he is allergic to touchdowns—refusing to touch the endzone like the floor is lava but he led the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, finishing with over 700 rushing yards and was top 10 in rushing first downs by seemingly always beating safeties to the marker with surprising acceleration.

Shit, he’s won a playoff game more recently than Aaron Rodgers has.

The Giants should 1000% draft a quarterback in the draft this year but I’m not in a hurry to drive Jones to the airport.

I’m seeing Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson and Zach Wilson and Will Levis all look overwhelmed.

It does not behoove the Giants to throw a rookie into the fire when Daniel Jones could go out there and lose the same amount of games without having his confidence shattered by a tough rookie campaign.

But then I watched Anthony Volpe hit a massive grand slam in the World Series and realized there’s only one thing that could make me throw Jones into the Atlantic Ocean.

Unleash Tommy DeVito. There’s something in the air. New Jersey Italians are thriving in this city right now.

If Brian Daboll makes DeVito the QB1 and DeVito plays decent, change all of the plans.

Cut Jones. Draft an O-Lineman or defensive playmaker in the first round and build around The GOAT.

Regardless, I will enjoy the rest of this season with Jones. He tried his best. It didn’t work out. At all. But he fucking tried.

Let’s run through some other takeaways from the Giants loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

1. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen should stay.

The refs were calling penalties like their boss was watching and they had to look busy. And Daboll managed to always make the right play call despite his offense committing every imaginable penalty to send them backward.

That game would’ve been a blowout for 90% of playcallers but Daboll consistently had this team overcoming their own inadequacies. Pat Shurmur loses that game by 50.

Malik Nabers is a future star. Dru Phillips and Theo Johnson could be starters for the next decade. Tyrone Tracy Jr makes any Saquon Barkley regret disappear.

Reports say team owner, John Mara, is keeping both the head coach and GM for next season and this game on Sunday proved why they deserve to be back.

I’d love to see what Daboll’s offense looks like with a quarterback that can throw a ball further than 12 yards down the field. Ya know, someone who doesn’t have to visit a spine specialist every few months.

2. They should trade Dexter Lawrence.

This one hurts because I love Dexter Lawrence. Outside of Michael Strahan, he’s easily the most talented defensive lineman I’ve ever seen in a Giants jersey. He is the anchor of a defense that leads the NFL in sacks.

But seeing Saquon Barkley have a massive impact on a potential playoff team, I’d love for Dexter Lawrence to play some meaningful football while he’s still in his physical prime. Lawrence is playing at the peak of his potential and his team has 2 wins.

The Giants could get some decent draft capital for him they could use to acquire more young talent to match the timeline of their new quarterback next season while Dexter Lawrence gets to play meaningful football in January.

3. Russell Wilson is better than Justin Fields.

I was steadfast in my belief Justin Fields was better than Russell Wilson.

I thought Russ had a weak arm, moved in slow motion, cared more about optics than actual football and was terrified by the thought of getting hit.

But Russ was balling Monday night.

Yea, Justin Fields can’t make these throws.

Russ got his ass beat by the Giants defense and popped up unphased each time. I reckon when the bar is Kenny Pickett, even Russell Wilson can look like an All-Star in Pittsburgh.

Justin Fields will have a full NFL career. He’s 25 years old. He’ll get plenty more opportunities. Aidan O’fucking’Connell is a starting quarterback right now. Fields will be fine.

I’m choosing to enjoy 2024 Russ before he starts posting weird TikToks, staring at his front-face camera and smiling at his own reflection, ruining the vibes.
