On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees lost 8-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays thanks to their defense commiting 4 errors in 3 innings.

Jasson Dominguez booted a ball in left field.

Jazz Chisholm spiked a ball in the dirt in front of Ben Rice.

Max Fried spiked a throw to home plate in the dirt.

The Yankees have now committed 12 errors in 10 games against the Blue Jays.

The fuck is going on?

On May 28, the Yankees led the AL East by 7 games.

Now they’re 4 games back in the division and in the most important series of the season so far, the team looked like Little Leaguers afraid of getting hit with the ball.

This isn’t even a new, surprising event.

They’ve sucked at defense forever.

It literally cost them the World Series.

Chris Taylor of the LA Dodgers said the Yankees “shit down their leg” after their Game 5 anxiety attack.

New York was up 5-0 in the 5th inning.

Then Aaron Judge dropped a line drive.

Anthony Volpe Anthony Volpe’d.

Gerrit Cole and Athony Rizzo had an awkward moment at first base where neither knew what to do.

Much like Wednesday’s collapse against Toronto, the Yankees are known, around the league, to forget how to play the sport—collectively—all at the same time—in the same inning.

Any other team consistently turns into the Bad New Bears at high-leverage moments, fires their manager.

Not the Yankees though..

Why is Aaron Boone still here?

Since his hiring in 2018, Aaron Boone has led the Yankees to the third-best record in baseball behind only the Dodgers and Astros.

They’ve been to the playoffs in every single season except one and the one year they didn’t, they immediately followed up with a World Series appearance.

The American League sucks this season.

Even if the Yankees lose the division, they’ll sleepwalk into a Wildcard spot.

And that’s after starting this year without Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil, their 2 best pitchers.

And what’s crazy is—if you look at the advanced stats [derogatory]—the Yankees defense is one of the best in baseball.

Prior to Wednesday’s humiliation ritual, the Yankees ranked 2nd in defensive efficiency, the rate at which batted balls are converted into outs. They were also tied for 6th in defensive runs saved.

Despite the annual underachieving and failing and struggling to match the intensity of the opposing dugouts, by all outside measures, Aaron Boone’s tenure with the Bronx Bombers has been a success.

The owner, Hal Steinbrenner, backs him.

The GM, Brian Cashman, trusts him.

The best hitter of his generation, Aaron Judge, loves him.

This average third basemen who happened to hit a walk off homer on the, at the time, unhittable Tim Wakefield, to send the Yankees to the World Series over the Boston Red Sox in 2003—has unlimited support from the organization despite this team clearly never reaching their full potential.

Aaron Judge should have more championship rings than fingers to put them on and instead, he’s surrounded by chokers that would make Bonnie Blue blush.

Speaking of chokers…

Anthony Volpe sucks

Your shortstop should be the best glove in the field.

He leads the entire sport in errors.

He’s the worst defender in baseball.

And I’ve been around baseball long enough to know sometimes teams allow a shitty glove in the field because their bat makes up for it.

Not Volpe’s.

This is AV’s third MLB season.

Among qualifying hitters with at least 1,500 plate appearances during that span, let’s see where Volpe ranks among his peers:

  • .224 batting average (76th of 76)
  • .287 on-base percentage (76th of 76)
  • .664 OPS (76th of 76th)

In his first 3 seasons, Anthony Volpe is the worst player in Major League Baseball.

He is the worst defender.

He is the worst hitter.

Sure, he’s only 24 years old but he is the total embodiment of the Yankees being dogshit.

But I have to bring this back to Aaron Boone.

Anthony Volpe won a Gold Glove in 2023. And in 2025, among shortstops, he ranks 24th out of 25 in fWAR.

Time and time again, top prospects have shown up, shown out and then fallen off a cliff.

From Greg Bird to Miguel Andujar to Clint Frazier to Gary Sanchez to Gleyber Torres.

Everyone not named Aaron Judge gets around Aaron Boone for a while and they just take their foot off the gas.

They decline.

They all become worse players.

The New York Yankees will never win a championship as long as Aaron Boone continues to allow these guys to play like dogshit.

And it looks like Boone isn’t going anywhere until he feels like it.

So let’s just all enjoy our regular-season victories over the Chicago White Sox.

It’s all we have.
