No matter what you do for a living, going to work every single day can get boring and grueling. Sometimes you need to manufacture motivation just to get through your 9 to 5 and there’s no bigger motivation than hate.
I’d have to imagine that’s true for NBA players as well. We’re approaching Christmas and after like, 6 weeks of nonstop basketball I think it’s understandable that these guys need to motivate themselves to get through big games.
On Friday night, the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans had a rematch of their brutal first-round series from last year. It also happens to be a battle of the 1 and 2 seeds in the Western Conference.
Anddd Phoenix got smacked. The Pelicans won 128-117.
But the story of the game isn’t New Orleans beating Phoenix. No, the story of the game was Zion Williamson murdering the Suns in front of a live audience and TV cameras.

With 1.9 seconds left in the game and the Pels already up double-digits, Zion Williamson hit a fastbreak 360 windmill dunk for no reason at all, Just absolute disrespect for his opponents.
Chaos would ensue…
Suns vs. Pelicans after Zion’s late game dunk. 👀

Was Cam Payne going to try and fight the Pelicans head coach? Also, Brandon Ingram and Chris Paul fought a few years back when they were on the Lakers and Rockets so I love this highly specific feud lasting a lifetime. Truly on sight for these two assholes.
Here’s Cam Payne explaining why he was so upset at the end of the game:
“The game was pretty much over, and they just kept playing,” Payne said. “I felt like there was just no sportsmanship, and we don’t really like that. We do the right thing. I felt like they should’ve done the right thing, and they didn’t. We didn’t take it well, and we don’t like to lose either. The game was over, no shot clock. They can hold the ball.”
I have been consistent in my stance toward late-game sportsmanship. If you don’t want your opponent to keep scoring when they’re up double-digits then don’t lose by double-digits. Win the game and you don’t have to cry about how the other team wins.
We finally got ourselves a new rivalry. Prior to this dust-up, the biggest rivals in the NBA were Trae Young vs. the Hawks coaching staff.
The Pelicans and Suns play this Sunday afternoon. Let’s see who brings the smoke and who pretends like this never happened.
