The 2025 Dallas Cowboys defense, non-existent all season.

The team traded away star pass rusher Micah Parsons, at the sunrise of the season, and brought in failed Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus to run their defense.

The Cowboys rank 29th in the league in yards allowed (374.9 yards allowed per game) and 31st in points allowed (30 per game).

One of the worst units in the NFL.

With 3 games left and his job on the line, Matt Eberflus will be spending Sundays elsewhere…

After a conversation with head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is moving from the sideline to the coaching booth to call plays for Dallas’ defense.

Eberflus said on Thursday that it was not the first time he and Schottenheimer had discussed the possibility, but they now believe it’s best for the Cowboys heading into their final three games of the 2025 season.

“I think that’s a really good thing,” Eberflus said. “[Schottenheimer] and I talked it through, and I’ve done it before. It’s really a chance for me to get good perspective, get good information, see the game develop in terms of information given to me on the sidelines… it’s been a while, but it’s going to be a good adjustment.” (Source)

The Dallas Cowboys are removing Matt Eberflus from the sideline and sending him up into the booth to call plays for the final 3 weeks.

Here are my 3 theories why Eberflus is coaching from a closed room now:

1. The Cowboys aren’t owned by a bank or private equity firm. All checks are written directly from the Jerry Jones family. The Jones family can’t afford to buyout Eberflus’s contract. So they’re stuck with him for the foreseeable future, despite giving up 450 yards to Russell Wilson, a now third-string QB. They can’t fire him so they’re forced to try something new.

2. They actually believe in him, and they have reason to. On November 3rd, Dallas lost a Monday Night Football game to the Arizona Cardinals. Jacoby Brissett, a backup, beat them.

On November 4th, Dallas acquired LB Logan Wilson from Cincinnati and DT Quinnen Williams from New York, went on a 3-game winning streak, including back-to-back answered prayers over the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs.

The Cowboys brought some talent into the building (after trading away their most talented for no reason), and suddenly, they had a professional football defense.

Maybe giving him a new vantage point improves the defensive chess game, Eberflus mastering which calls to play at which time, something you’d hope your DC discovers before Week 16.

3. He’s annoying. Maybe they literally don’t want Eberflus on the sidelines because he’s a real bother.
