The Best Streaming Shows/Movies For Sports Fans During The Off-Season

We all know that post-series depression is a real thing. The big games end, the season winds down, and you’re left with months of nothing to do. It happens every year, but that doesn’t make it easier for you to deal with.

Regardless of what sport you’re into, you’ll have many weeks or months with nothing to do. Your usual routine of watching games is completely thrown away, so what can you do with all this extra time?

Luckily, plenty of streaming platforms have released – and are still releasing – loads of excellent content for sports fans. There’s an abundance of movies and TV shows that make for fantastic viewing and will help you fill the void. Check out some of the top selections below if you’re looking for something to pass the time before the games return:

A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own is one of the newest series on this list, and it’s a very interesting watch for baseball fans. Effectively, it tells the story of women playing baseball in the US during the 1940s, when the men were at war.

It’s an extremely eye-opening series that tackles loads of classic prejudices you find in women’s sports these days – such as sexism and homophobia. There’s also a lot of focus on the racism many black women experienced during the time. It’s very powerful, but you also have some great baseball scenes. If you want to learn more about the history of baseball, this is a brilliant one to watch.

The Last Dance

An instant classic when it hit the small screen in 2020, The Last Dance tells the story of the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. It offers a fascinating insight into his rise to glory and the unique characteristics that helped him stay at the top of the game.

NBA fans will absolutely love this, and I’ll be surprised if you haven’t already seen it. In and amongst the interviews, you get plenty of clips of MJ in his prime, absolutely tearing up the league. As expected, the series threw up plenty of Lebron James vs. Michael Jordan debates on social media – where do you stand on that?

The Mighty Ducks

With the holiday season around the corner, you might be inclined to get in the festive spirit. Clearly, there will be loads of Christmas movies available on streaming platforms in the coming months. You can find just about anything in any genre – including stuff for sports fans. Cool Runnings is a fine choice, but nothing beats The Mighty Ducks.

If you’re an ice hockey fan, this is a cult classic that must be seen. It tells the story of a team of young teens that get coached by an ex-lawyer as part of his community service. As you can imagine, it’s the perfect underdog story with plenty of humor and some really great action shots when the hockey matches are being played. Definitely worth a watch if you haven’t already!

Rise

Another really good film to watch if you’re not that into TV series. Rise is based on the true story of the Antetokounmpo brothers, who emigrated to the US. They eventually went on to find fame in the basketball world, with Giannis going on to be one of the best talents around right now.

If you’re a Giannis fan or just an NBA fan in general, you’ll enjoy the story. But, it’s great for all sports fans because it’s another proper underdog story. This one is based on true events, so it’s even more inspiring than The Mighty Ducks.

The League

One final offering for you, and it’s a bit different from all the others. There are loads of excellent series out there that are either based on true sporting events or dramatic interpretations of a sport. But, The League is a hit comedy show that’s basically all about fantasy football

NFL fans will absolutely love the show because you see a lot of yourself in it. A group of friends has their own league, and each season is full of calamity. You’ll relate to the drama and the urge to beat your friends so much, and it’s also super funny. In fact, it’s so funny that even if you aren’t interested in American Football, you’ll still enjoy the show.

You’ve got plenty of options here to fill the void during the off-season when your favorite sport ends. Naturally, lots of other shows and movies could’ve made this list – such as Friday Night Lights, Ted Lasso, and all of the Rocky movies. So, if you make your way through these, just know you’ve got many more shows/films to pass the time!
