This week, it was announced that Tyler Huntley will be replacing Super Bowl-bound Patrick Mahomes in the Pro Bowl. It makes zero sense to choose a backup QB who started only 4 games to be one of three quarterbacks to represent the AFC in the Pro Bowl. Well, it makes no sense until you take 30 seconds to think about it and you realize he was the only logical choice.
Due to pretending to care about player safety, the NFL has essentially made the Pro Bowl optional. First, every Pro Bowler that’s in the Super Bowl becomes ineligible to compete in the weekend’s All-Star festivities. But that grace has been expanded to pretty much every playoff starter.
Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen were the original Pro Bowl selections. Mahomes is excused so he can go focus on a game that actually matters. Josh Allen is nursing an elbow injury. Joe Burrow is out (feelings hurt) but Derek Carr was selected to replace him.
Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert were selected as the alternates. They are also both injured. That leaves Lamar Jackson who, too, is too hurt to play flag football and putt-putt golf or whatever the little Pro Bowl activities are.
The last good AFC quarterback left standing next to Derek Carr is Trevor Lawrence who was also selected to the Pro Bowl which means there’s one spot left and there’s no one left who is more deserving than Tyler Huntley.
Here’s what Tyler Huntley did this season stepping in for Lamar Jackson and leading the Baltimore Ravens to the playoffs:
- 795 total yards
- 67% completion percentage
- 3 total touchdowns
- 3 interceptions
Nothing that totally jumps off the page but again, he started 4 games and led his team to the playoffs. Who in the AFC is more deserving than Huntley? Russell Wilson? The sexual predator in Cleveland? Mac Jones? Do you really want Mac Jones to play 2 NFL seasons of mediocre football and become a 2-TIME PRO BOWLER??
Plus, this is a flag football game.
Who would you rather see out there? Tyler Huntley being elusive and scrambling and making the game interesting or like, Matt Ryan out there moving in slow motion like a DC movie action sequence?
Tyler Huntley is playing in a game that doesn’t matter but for the remainder of his career, we all need to address him as PRO BOWLER, Tyler Huntley. If that puts more money in my man’s pocket when it’s contract negotiation time then we should all be celebrating.
