Adam Wainwright is 40 years old. Jon Lester is 37. Between them, they have 5,110.2 innings pitched in their careers. Honestly forgot that not only were these two pitchers still in the Majors but they’re both leading the St. Louis Cardinals to an NL Wild Card playoff berth after running up 17 straight wins out of nowhere.
Wainwright is set to start the Wild Card game for the Cards after posting a 17-7 record with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Again, this man is 40 YEARS OLD, and he’s 2nd in the NL in innings pitched. In a time where starters only get 5 or 6 innings before getting yanked for 100mph flamethrowers in the bullpen, Wainwright is a relic from a long gone era where starters pitched 8 innings and handed the ball off to the closer in the 9th.
Jon Lester wasn’t having the same level of success this season when he was on the Washington Nationals. He looked extremely 37 years old. But something happened on July 30th when he was acquired by the Cardinals. Something in that Missouri tap water. All you do is win games and then head down to Marty Byrd’s sketchy river casino.
26-year old Jack Flaherty was supposed to be the new top Ace of this St. Louis rotation but nope, he can’t even get a start over 38 year old JA Happ. Take your young ass to the bullpen young man. You can pitch when the adults are finished.
And I haven’t even mentioned the 39-year old catcher in his 18th career MLB season calling these games. Batting .254 with 11 homers. Cute little stats for a guy who should be playing golf before Scrooge McDucking into his pool of $163 million career earnings.
There is no country for old men is a lie. It’s in St. Louis.
Oh, also quick shout out to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies for trading away their best players—Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado—to the Cardinals for absolutely no reason. If you cannot afford to pay the best players on your baseball team then you shouldn’t be able to own a baseball team. With ya broke ass.
