The Knicks are quietly become the most consistent and normal organization in the NBA after a couple of decades of being the laughing stock of the league and that’s mainly due to the GM hiring of Scott Perry in 2017.
6 years and 2 playoff appearances later and it is being reported this week Scott Perry will not be returning to the team next season.
I was prepared to ignore this story because Knicks fans have been tricked into believing Leon Rose created this team but Rose wasn’t hired as the Team President until 2020. Perry was in charge when the Knicks traded Carmelo Anthony to OKC and he shipped Kristaps Porzingis’s ass to Dallas and the team is still reaping the benefits of that deal.
Scott Perry also signed Julius Randle but I won’t give him credit for bringing in a guy that no one on the planet believed would become a 2-time All-NBA player. Randle was only signed because Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving changed their minds. It worked out for the Knicks but I won’t get carried away when Perry also signed Bobby Portis and Marcus Morris along with Julius Randle. You don’t get a round of applause from me for signing 3 power forwards at the same time.
But after taking a step back and thinking about it, it’s strange for Perry to quietly be pushed out of the front office without anyone really talking about it.
It was clear from the moment Leon Rose arrived he and his boy World Wide Wes were in charge—not Scott Perry. Rose went as far as hiring former Timberwolves president, Gersson Rosas, as a special consultant. Perhaps Rose was always preparing to hire Rosas as the GM but had to wait for Perry’s contract to end.
Personally, I’m in no rush to give Rosas more power considering last time he had power in an organization he was fired for having an affair with one of his employees. I want professionals who care about winning and enjoy the process and most importantly, are not too horny to go to work and go home without trying to finger a team staffer.
Should Knicks fans worry about Scott Perry leaving the front office?
It all depends on how much credit you give Perry for the good signings. Like, I have no idea how instrumental he was in signing Jalen Brunson this past summer. It seemed like a real Leon Rose move with all of their previous history and such.
Scott Perry hired David Fizdale and drafted Kevin Knox. I think I’m okay with him finding work elsewhere for those two moves alone. I will never forgive Fizdale for smiling ear to ear while the team was down a bajillion to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Nevermind about whatever I was going to say about Perry. He hired the worst coach in NBA history. I’m sick. Get this man out of New York. Leon Rose came in and immediately cleaned up his Elfrid Payton mess by bringing in a real point guard. Yea actually, maybe Scott Perry sucks and got lucky drafting Mitchell Robinson. I don’t expect there to be a huge market of teams sprinting to bring in the guy who tried to build around Emmanuel fucking Mudiay.
