On October 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin pointed what he believed was a prop gun directly at the camera and shot Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when the fake gun fired. He also wounded the film’s director, Joel Souza.
As I’m sure you are aware, you cannot shoot people in cold blood at work so this became a major deal.
Alec Baldwin’s team claims that he never actually pulled the trigger and had no idea there were live bullets in the chamber but the FBI determined that the Colt .45 he was holding literally cannot fire without someone pulling the trigger so that excuse is out of the window.
Gutierrez Reed, the film’s 24-year-old armorer, is also on trial as she is responsible for the guns on set but Reed claims Baldwin is the one who showed up to set with real bullets and supplied it to the crew.
Just a weird ass movie set where seemingly everyone was out there playing with guns like it was no big deal.
Personally, I think everyone involved in this nonsense should be arrested for attempting to film a Western movie in 2021 starring Alec fucking Baldwin of all people. This Rust movie was doomed the second it was conceived.
Alec Baldwin and the armorer are facing 18 months for involuntary manslaughter and a potential minimum sentence of 5 years.
Here’s what Baldwin’s lawyer had to say about the charges:
“This decision distorts Halyna Hutchins’ tragic death and represents a terrible miscarriage of justice. Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun — or anywhere on the movie set. He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds. We will fight these charges, and we will win.”
I reckon it’s important to point out that the behind-the-scenes crew had walked off set hours before the shooting occurred out of protest to the way they were being treated. They had 14+ work days plus their commutes to set and were not granted paid hotel rooms closer.
It sounds like there was an angry crew with real guns and real bullets being handed around for some reason and no one was safe that day.
This is what happens when you don’t respect your workers as real people deserving of rights and happiness and you cast an elderly alcoholic to star in a Western where he gets to pretend to be a cowboy and shoot guns at the very same people he doesn’t give a shit about. The recipe for this type of ‘accident’.
If no one was around except Alec Baldwin and the woman who tragically died that day, do you think we’d even find out this happened? Just think about that next time you see a clip of him weeping and fake crying on camera because he would’ve driven home and called his agent to handle the dead body if that happened without an audience.
