Every article I post on this site has at least one line dedicated to shitting on the current state of sports media. On Saturday night, UConn star sophomore, Paige Bueckers, won the ESPY award for best women’s college athlete and used her speech to put sports media on blast.
This speech is too cool!ππ
19-year-old Paige Bueckers (UConn Basketball) won the 2021 ESPY Award for Best Women’s College Athlete, and she used the speech to shine the light of Black Women.

I want to immediately take the spotlight off Paige Bueckers. She’s an absolute sniper on a basketball court but if I sit here and give her praise for saying that black women deserve more attention then I am doing the exact opposite of what I’d be praising her for.
But of course sports media will give Bueckers more love for this while simultaneously refusing to cover black athletes.
But let’s focus specifically on the WNBA and their marketing of white women over black women.
Love my New York Liberty. They’re probably the worst franchise in sports but man, do I love watching them devour L’s. Last season they drafted Sabrina Ionescu and she was instantly treated like the number one star in the game.
She was a triple-double machine in college as certainly is worthy of acclaim but she was catapulted into every TV screen due to her (odd) friendship with Kobe Bryant. BUT, if ESPN and the entirety of sports media didn’t treat Ionescu like god’s gift to women’s basketball then Kobe would’ve never looked in her direction.
Chennedy Carter was in Sabrina’s draft class and she absolutely deserves as much if not more attention than Ionescu. I mean, Carter plays way more like Kobe than Ionescu does but that’s sports media.
Here’s Sue Bird, the most famous WNBA player:

I know some people will see this clip and be like ‘come on, man. She’s 40 years old.” Yea. That’s my point.
Explain to me why this 40-year old who dramatically limps off the court every. single. game. is somehow more deserving of a Team USA Olympic roster spot over Nneka Ogwunike. This will be the first Olympic roster that didn’t allow a former MVP on the roster.
And don’t hit me with the ‘experience’ argument for Sue over Nneka when Ogwunike has played on USA FIBA Championship teams and led them to gold medals. She has experience as well. And again, she has a fucking MVP trophy.
Also, replace Sue Bird’s name with Diana Taurasi and it’s the same argument. Sports media prefers the whites. In a sport that is predominantly black, their preference for snow people is even more obvious.
Thank you Paige Bueckers. Now, if you really want to help black women get more love then you’ll RETIRE TODAY.
