Joey Gallo is a 28-year 2-time All-Star who completely forgot how to hit a baseball this season. He was an automatic out and a sigh of relief for opposing pitchers. When he stepped into the batter’s box you knew he was going to strike out.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a deal to acquire outfielder Joey Gallo from the New York Yankees, a source tells ESPN, confirming @ragazzoreport. The trade, the source says, is pending a medical review and should be completed soon.

Andddd it’s over. The Yankees somehow tricked the Los Angeles Dodgers to trade for Gallo. I was planning on making some joke about these two teams meeting in the World Series and Gallo getting his revenge but honestly, there’s a zero percent chance Gallo makes their postseason roster. Joey Gallo has a month to try out for clubs looking for outfield help next season.
But let’s reflect on the good times he had in the Bronx.
Opening Night
The Yankees started the 2022 season with an extra inning banger against the Boston Red Sox winning 6-5 against their rivals and setting the tone for the season.
Joey Gallo went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts. He, too, set the tone for what his season was about to be.
April 19th
The Yankees headed to Detroit for their first series against the Tigers. They won 4-2 and managed to rally after a disappointing start by the ‘ace’ Gerrit Cole who gave up 5 walks and 2 runs and was pulled in the 2nd inning.
Not only did the team have to overcome Cole’s shortcomings but Joey Gallo was PEAK Joey Gallo going 0-for-4 and striking out all 4 times. Truly impressive. Wow, he’s just like me.
But it feels like I’m cherry-picking bad games, let’s get out of April.
All of June
In 22 games, Gallo had 9 hits to 32 strikeouts. Literally 50% of his at-bats ended with a called strike 3. I don’t even want to go into the rest of his season. It’s getting depressing. He has more games of multiple strikeouts than he has of games where he has ONE hit.
Perhaps it is unfair to single Gallo out. It’s not his fault he happens to be hitting in a lineup with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton—two guys who will go down as the greatest hitters of their generation. Of course he stands out like a sore thumb next to players who casually break home run records annually.
And would you rather see Brett Gardner out there swinging through a fastball directly down the middle of the plate and then staring down the umpire like the ref made him swing and miss at a pitch that the woman in the bleacher selling peanuts could’ve doubled off of?
Would you rather Clint Frazier out there catching a routine fly ball and choosing to dive head first into the outfield wall for no reason and then complain about the Yankees not letting him be an individual because he can’t wear his kitty cat cleats?
Here’s what Joey Gallo said this week regarding how this season has made him feel:
Kansas City guys reached out to me over the weekend. A bunch of guys. It makes me feel like a piece of s**t, honestly. I remember playing here with the Rangers, watching [Yankees] get booed off the field and thinking, ‘Holy s**t! I feel bad for that guy.’ Now it’s me. I do appreciate people reaching out, but it makes me feel like I’m a problem.
Imagine you’re a cashier at Target and you are terrible at your job. Double scanning items. Constantly making mistakes that can only be corrected by your supervisor you have to always call over and hold up the line and every customer hates you. You’re so bad that cashiers from Walmart and Costco are texting you like ‘keep your head up, bro. It gets easier’.
You’d probably feel like a piece of shit too.
Maybe moving to Los Angeles will reignite his bat. Or, maybe he’ll end up being the worst cashier at Target by the end of the year. Neither outcome would shock me.
