When people show you who they are, believe them. I knew Grant Williams was a loser in the 2022 NBA Finals when he decided to spend all of his energy attempting to ‘get in Draymond Green’s head’ while the Warriors were, ya know, focused on actually winning the NBA championship.

The Boston Celtics lost in 6 games. Grant Williams averaged 4.1 points.
Needless to say, Boston wasn’t upset this summer when the Dallas Mavericks wanted to add the restricted free agent to their ball club.
Sources: The Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics are finalizing a three-team trade:
– Mavs: Grant Williams
– Spurs: Reggie Bullock and an unprotected Dallas pick swap in 2030
– Celtics: Multiple second-round picks pic.twitter.com/7Bi6Dykydf— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 5, 2023
The Mavericks wanted Grant Williams so badly, they even threw in a 2030 first-round pick swap.
Why did the Dallas Mavericks want Grant Williams?
If I was capable of recognizing Grant Williams’s loser energy from my futon, what were the Mavs expecting to get him from?
See, most of the NBA media is from Boston so whether they are cognizant of it or not, they tend to praise Celtics players more than they deserve. Grant Williams was given this reputation as a top defender in the league thanks to guys like Bill Simmons or Kevin O’Connor repeating it over and over.
The 2022-23 Dallas Mavericks finished 25th in defensive rating. They had a 38-44 record and missed the playoffs. With a Luka Doncic/Kyrie Irving backcourt, Dallas needed roleplayers who could make an impact on the defensive side.
Grant’s biggest problem—outside of being a gigantic loser—is his inability to generate his own shot but when you play with one of the best playmakers ever in Luka Doncic, you don’t need to know how to dribble. Luka will get you buckets.
Anddddd 7 months later, Dallas traded him, along with Seth Curry and a first-round pick to Charlotte for PJ Washington.

Why did the Mavericks give up on Grant Williams?
Turns out, Dallas finally found out he was a loser.
On ESPN’s Hoop Collective podcast, Mavs beat writer, Tim McMahon, implied Grant didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the guys.
“The fact that they gave up a 2030 swap for Grant Williams and then dumped him as soon as they possibly could—they were determined to dump him. It’s not just getting P.J. Washington. They wanted to be out of the Grant Williams business. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.”
Turns out, the guy who spent the NBA Finals playing freeze tag with Draymond Green is a weird dude to travel across the country with every night. Who could’ve predicted this??
Grant Williams seems like the guy who thinks saying “That’s what she said” is the funniest thing anyone can ever say.
No one wants to hang with the coworker who bombards you with annoying ass questions like “Did you watch the new episode of Family Guy last night??” first thing Monday morning. You’re just settling in for the day and here comes Grant Williams showing you a meme from 3 years ago—that wasn’t even that funny 3 years ago—on his shattered iPhone screen.
Grant Williams passes you back the blunt covered in all of his salivae.
As far as basketball goes, Grant is shooting 41% from the field this year. Dallas was playing 4-on-5 whenever Williams was on the court.
I cannot stress enough how much of a loser this man is.
So what’s next for Grant Williams in Charlotte?
Grant Williams has 3 years left on his contract after this season. He’s going to be in Charlotte for a minute. I can’t imagine teams are rushing to add Grant’s $13 million a year to their books knowing he’s coming to brick shots and dress up like a loser.
Grant is landing on a Charlotte team full of kids who treat basketball as some embarrassing gig they do on the side. Miles Bridges is in the studio right now rapping off beat and threatening to strangle whatever poor girl is stuck in there choking on weed smoke while she waits for her boyfriend to finish doing whatever the guy on turning knobs does—while Grant Williams is wearing onesie pajamas, re-watching Guardians of the Galaxy 2, wondering why girls aren’t texting him back.
We’re about a week away from a video of Grant naked duct taped to the front of the Hornets team facility
Pray for our nerdy, lame cousin, Grant.
